TRUE VICTORY

“Baldy” I yelled at my neighbourhood boy, but he didn’t respond though I was sure that he heard me. “Hey baldy boy” I yelled again indicating that I'm not going to leave him till he reacts to me. He turned at me in response though he said nothing, but his face revealed it all! He felt insulted and thus I scored a point over him. I'm a teenager searching for troubles, I want some action in my life so I provoked and insulted other boys of my age.  I used my creativity in calling names, missing school and collecting cigarettes.     So when I spotted this lean boy with a shaved head in my neighbourhood, I instantly tried to pickup a fight with him, but he didn’t respond to my challenge.  Whenever I called him ‘baldy’ he sadly looked at me and moved away.  I knew that he was hurt, but that’s what my aim was! One day I spotted him before my house and cried in excitement “Hey baldy! Are you going for a haircut?” he said nothing as usual and moved on with dampened eyes.  As I entered my house proud with my little victory in insulting the boy, I saw my mother standing at the main door, ‘she probably heard my squeals and would scold me for my bad manners’ – I thought, but rather she asked me with a grim face “Do you know why his hair is removed?” “Why not! He might have been to a pilgrimage” I answered rudely. “No!” mother shouted with anguish “he is undergoing chemotherapy, he is in the final stages of cancer” I was shocked to hear those words, I'm not an adult but still knew what they meant; cancer, pain, chemotherapy, advanced stages, death…I felt so guilty at my behaviour that I've decided to apologise that boy, the next time I see him. It’s been a week since I've seen him and was desperate to meet him and make him my friend, but he's no where in the sight.  Their house was locked and his cycle was chained to the bars. “He’s dead” mother said at the breakfast that day “he’s dead last night after a week long struggle in the ICU” Tears rolled from my eyes with guilt and compassion, I remembered the last time I’ve seen him; I’ve insulted him in front of my house! I remembered his gloomy face hurt with my comments and eyes dampened with the insult. I couldn’t have saved him from his inevitable death but could have brightened his short life by invoking some joy and hope. I've realised thereafter that true victory lies in winning hearts rather than defeating people.   - K.L.Surya.

To be a great teacher

Most of us might have played the role of a student in our lives. But very few are lucky enough to be a teacher. Lives might have changed and world might have got sophisticated, but the position of a teacher is still revered. Here are a few qualities that would often make difference between a teacher and THE BEST teacher... Be an example A teacher should be the role model to his students. The way he dresses, they way he behaves would always form an impression on his students. He has to be careful even while choosing his words. And his character too would of course influence his students. He has to be soft with them, yet firm. He has to be jovial, yet professional. In one word, he has to be the one they love to be when they grow up- A matured human being! Gives some space Some teachers get so close to their students, and yet they know their limits. They are like a father who knows when to pamper his children and when to control them. This would give scope to their students to seek the knowledge without fear. This would give them an opportunity to raise any question and clarify any doubt... even at the personal level. Clear in objectives A teacher should be sure of the goals he wishes to achieve. He is fully aware that his job is not just to deliver a lecture. He knew that the role of a teacher is much more than that in the lives of his students. They have to learn things; they have to share their thoughts; they should get creative; they have to gain good results in academics; they have to polish their character. And the teacher should have a clear idea of what to do and what to achieve with his students. Interested in each student Every person is unique in his character and the truth suits to the students as well. Every student has his own way of learning things, facing problems and solving them. Some might be tough in behaviour and some might be tough to teach. Thus a good teacher should be expert in multi tasking. He should consider the students as a group AND as different entities at the same time. Knowledge should be useful The primary task of a teacher is to impart knowledge to his students. But he would be successful only if it looks as fun while teaching and important while learning. A lecture full of real life examples and anecdotes would serve that goal. A teacher can associate the subject to the lives of the students ONLY if he loves the subject and has command over it. - Nirjara.

Transformation

“What nonsense are you doing there” grandpa yelled at me in the garden. ‘This old man pesters me a lot’ I thought as I shouted back “can’t you see that I’m destroying the caterpillars!” and continued my work trying to ignore the desperate words of my grandpa discouraging me from my work.  I took each one of the caterpillar with a forceps and dropped them in a small bucket filled with phenyl water.  It’s not all a work that I could enjoy; the pungent smell of the phenyl and the twisting of the caterpillars in pain made me feel sick, but I’ve decided to eradicate all the caterpillars in my garden.  I could’ve ignored them if they were few, but they were everywhere in the garden, they came along with the monsoon as if they were dropped from the clouds, but then grew rapidly in no time feeding on every green piece in the garden – It’s an invasion.   We had to be very careful not to touch them as their tiny thorns would make us itchy.  The whole garden smelled of their bodies and no plant could escape from their assault, so one day I took the decision of destroying them all and here I am, doing what I've decided! *****   It’s been a month since I've performed ‘operation caterpillar’ and I was sitting in the garden along with my grandpa, we both were enjoying our evening tea when I suddenly screamed “grandpa! Look how beautiful that butterfly is” pointing at a  butterfly resting on a stem, it was so colourful as if a small garland is made out of a few different flowers, it has two big eyes on its wings as if to admire its own beauty! I looked at my grandpa hoping him to add a few more praises to my comments, but he looked as if he’s hurt with my comments, his face turned red and his eyes dampened as he slowly picked up some words   “Do you realise from where that butterfly came from? That was probably one of those caterpillars that escaped from you, now imagine how many butterflies would have been there in this garden if you haven’t killed all those caterpillars, you mercilessly kill them and now show off your aesthetic sense when one of them escaped from you and turned into a butterfly!” “But what can I do? You know that they were such a nuisance!” I protested though I felt guilty of what I’ve done.   “Nuisance! Have you ever spared some thought to find out what’s going on in the nature right in front of your eyes before you call it a nuisance?” “What’s the big deal in it” I shrugged my shoulders confused by my grandpa’s anger.   “Son! A man can either behave foolishly or selfishly, but there’s always a cause behind the moments of every other organism in this world; the flowers of a plant, the song of a bird, the dance of a peacock… everything has a reason behind it.  Look at those caterpillars for instance; the thorns over their body would protect their delicate bodies from their predators, they eat a lot so that they can have enough strength for hibernation, they build a nest by shedding their thorns and come out of it in flying colours, even without the thorns they have their own way of self protection, the colours on their wings would confuse their predators with the flowers and the eyes on their wings would make them appear like strange animals, even if some predator tries to catch it, the butterfly can escape swiftly as its wings are coated with fine particles which might be the reason why we call it a butterfly.    Plants attract these butterflies through flowers and honey for the purpose of pollination, you see! The whole process of nature is going on before out eyes as smoothly as a butterfly landing on a flower.” “My God!” I said surprised at the analysis “I've read every bit of what you’ve said, but never looked at it in depth!”   “You have not yet seen the depth my son, what I've told you now is just a fact, you haven’t learnt the message yet. Like a caterpillar you should shed off your negative attitude (the thorns), evaluate yourselves in solitude (hibernation), and come out with a beautiful character (the butterfly). Defend yourselves though you are not dangerous (the eyes on the wings), don’t get caught easily in risky situations (slippery wings) and finally extract the honey out of life. Hope you had enough lessons to learn from a single butterfly!”   As grandpa stood up with a smile proud of his victory over my ignorance, I looked at a butterfly over a rose; I've seen it many times before but now… -K.L.Surya

Have you heard about Holland Codes?

No two people on earth can be similar. Because, everyone on this planet has a unique character of his own! But people can certainly be bifurcated into different categories based on their traits. An American psychologist named John Holland has moved further ahead. He suggested that people of some traits are more suitable to certain occupations. Holland divided people into six different categories for this purpose. And he used the acronym RIASEC to let those divisions be remembered. R for Realistic People falling under this category are `Doers’. They are practical and realistic and do not live in an imaginary world. They are hard working and love to work even on outdoors. They are interested in things rather than ideas. Driving, Agriculture, Carpentry are some of the categories that suit such personalities. I for Investigative Such people are curious in nature and logical in thinking. They love to explore and investigate. They like to research and experiment. Biology, Computer Programming, Mathematics are some of the examples for the fields in which Investigative people can excel. A for Artistic These are the ones who love to create something. They prefer imagination and creativity. They love to change the existing circumstance or create a new one. They are spontaneous in thought and aesthetic in sense. There need not be much hustle to determine the fields in which such people are well suited. Creative fields such as Writing, Editing, Dancing, Music composing etc are well suited for such people. S for Social People who fall under this category either excel or dominate in a social environment. They are philanthropic in nature and have a caring attitude. They are generous and service oriented. They are more suitable in social organisations such as hospitals (as nurse), schools (as teachers or caretakers). These are the people best suited for voluntary or non government organisations. E for Enterprising As the name indicates, these people are the ones who love to lead, motivate and persuade others to do things. They are energetic in nature and dominant over others. They are ambitious in their pursuits and brave in their decisions. Marketing agents, Managers, Investors, Bankers, Businessmen... would be the positions suitable for people with an `Enterprising’ character. C for Conventional These are the ones who love to follow the rules. They want the things to be in order as per set rules. They are organised and strive to keep their environment in a structured pattern. They are in one word... the `Organisers’. Such people are highly needed for the smooth functioning of an organisation. Clerks, Accountants, Secretaries, Office Assistants... would all fall under the category suitable for conventional people.  Well! These Holland Codes need not affect our judgement while choosing a career. But they are certainly helpful in forming one. Various Educational institutions and Government departments in Europe keep the RIASEC in mind while training their students and employees. - Nirjara

The Art of Conversation

Conversation has made a man, a civilised person. It is only through conversation that we could express our feelings directly. It is only through conversation that we know about the opinions and objections of whom we are speaking to. But, many ignore the fact that conversation is just like any other art. We excel in it if we follow some basic tricks...   Listen more: Good listeners are often praised as good speakers. Because... in the course of conversation... listening is as important as speaking. People often try to dominate the conversation by explaining much about themselves and their views. Such a takeover would often leave the other person feel inferior and embarrassing.   No Debates:  People often start with a pleasant conversation and end up with fumed debates. It’s always safe not to enter into controversial issues while speaking. Varied people may have varied opinions about varied things... and you need not try contradicting each one of their views, especially when you are involved in an informal talk.   Be Clear and confident:  People keep mumbling and stammering during their conversation. Being clear and confident would always yield the best opinions for us. We might not be great orators to win every speech in our lives, but we can always excel in the little conversations of our daily life. We should be clear in delivering our opinion, our sentence formation... and it is only through confidence and practice that we could achieve such clarity.   The subject of conversation:  Every person is unique in his character. But two people in conversation can always have common subject that’s interesting to both of them. So, if you wish to come out as a winner out of conversation, choose to talk about a subject that is of mutual interest.   Honour the partner:  People often wish to evolve as a hero out of their conversations. They spend much time in expressing their opinions and elevating their character. They won’t let others speak and would often interrupt in between. Such a conversation could only satisfy the ego of the dominant speaker but would hurt their partner in conversation. Let others speak, let him say much about himself, compliment him for his abilities, react to his humour... let him feel your recognition. And you will be the winner of the conversation and his heart.   - Nirjara.

Most Fortunate Hand

“Wow! The lines on your hand are very interesting” commented my friend who is an amateur palmist.  Though I'm pleased with those remarks, they are not new to me. Whenever some palmist looked at my hands, he has something to awe. This encouraged me to gain some knowledge in palmistry and used to look at my palm while reading a book on the subject. When the book says ‘soft palms indicate a sensitive person’ I keep aside the book, press my hands, get satisfied that they are soft and I'm sensitive.  ‘A straight thumb indicates a strong character’ says the book and I raise my thumb to be satisfied that it’s as straight as a pine tree. ‘A star mark on the mount of Saturn’, ‘the heart line bending towards the mount of moon’…I used to cross check every detail of my palm with the books.   I used to observe the hands of the people I met as they waved them in the air, like a puppy waiting for the biscuit to be thrown at it.  Finally I'm satisfied that I've got the best lines among my friends which would make me a great person in future. As the days passed by into years, everything has changed except the lines on my hand; they still indicated a glorious life. Though I'm a little bit disappointed with my subtle life, my belief on the lines in my palm is still intact, I'm almost certain that some miracle is going to happen in my life which would change it forever.   I'm still at the habit of looking at the hands of the people I met; estimating their character and their present state of life through the lines on their hands. I was proud of my skill in palmistry until I met this person. My friend introduced him to me in a party as his boss, I was with my usual habit of watching the hands of the new person expecting some great combination of lines for such a highly successful personality   but there came the shock of my life, nothing seemed to be fine with those lines. It contained all those negative aspects that were referred in the books I studied; primitive hand, pale lines, sullen mounts, crosses all over, awkward thumb…it’s almost ‘the hand of a beggar’!   I couldn’t hide the surprise from my friend and remarked to him while he was alone “Are you serious that he’s your boss? His hands suggest him to be a beggar! He’s supposed to be the most worthless and unlucky person in the hall”   “You are right when you said that he is a beggar, but wrong to expect him to be worthless” my friend answered calmly and continued despite my confused looks “he was born to a beggar, but determined not to be one of them. He’s done everything to lift himself up step by step; cleaned the cars at the junction, worked as a daily labourer, washed the toilets, ran a tea stall... With only one motive behind – determination to be, what he wants to be!” “But the lines in his hands…” I tried to object.   “He never cared about the lines in his hands but only cared for their purpose” rebuked my friend “He once remarked to me that our hands are the most powerful tools in the world and they would rust our character if not used for a long time.”   As my friend left me to join his boss, I've discovered the main principle of palmistry i.e., ‘A hand that works is the most fortunate hand’.  Now I'm more interested in deeds than in lines.   - Nirjara.

Being a Single Father

Bollywood star Tusshar Kapoor might not have too many films in his pocket to be proud of. A few films like Golmaal and Shootout at Lokhandwala are the only ones that peep out of his filmography. But Tusshar is now the talk of the town with his latest achievement. He has opted to become a single father through IVF.   Not a News:  Being a single father through infertility process is not new for India. Amitava Banerjee, a lawyer from Kolkata has become the first single father in India... way back in 2005. But Amitava had to fight hard to legalise his heir. Things have changed since then and society has moved on. It is more than easy for the rich to become a single father. People can find donors who give eggs as well as those ready to surrogate the child.   Why is it Trending:  Having kids through IVF has already been accepted by the society. It has become a boon to those couples who are unable to conceive naturally. Celebrities like Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan have all been through this process. But Tusshar has now become the first Bollywood bachelor to become a `single father’ through IVF. And Tusshar might not be the only one to follow the trend.     The institution of marriage is no longer felt compulsory by some. But they don’t want to miss the joy and responsibility involved in it. Tusshar seems to have shown them a way to follow. Bachelors above 40 years might now look to IVF to pamper their parenthood. Dr Firuza Parikh, the Doctor responsible for Tusshar’s IVF has asserted that single men and women are rapidly approaching their medical facility to become single parents devoid of marriage.   Pros and Cons:  Most of the netizens have expressed their concern for the child when they heard the news of Tusshar. They felt that the life of a child can never be complete without his mother. And their worry seems to be valid to some extent. The life of a kid without her mother is never complete and comfortable. The biological and psychological needs of a child are hard to be satisfied by the father alone. Much care and nurture is needed on behalf of father to fulfil the needs of his kid. He has to act as both father and mother for the purpose. Can He!   ..Nirjara

How to Google the Google

Googling is not just a fashion. It has become a necessity in our daily life. From scholars to students, people have started depending on Google to enrich their knowledge and gather some conclusions. Though we have to be careful before depending on open sources in net, there are few tricks that help us in obtaining the information we are searching for. Watch out...   The Minus sign:  Do you want to know about the places named Tajmahal other than the monument in Agra... then simply type- Tajmahal  -Agra. Using this minus symbol, you can eliminate the unwanted results. The Asterisk symbol:   You know a part of the sentence you wish to Google, but you are not sure of a few words in the sentence. Then you can just use the * mark to fill up the sentence. For example- `The * of garbage truck’ might rightly lead you to `The law of garbage truck’. You can use more than one Asterisk symbols to fill up the sentence if needed (Ex: The * of garbage *).   Image search:  People often ignore the value of image search in the Tabs beneath the Google search. You can upload an image to find a similar image using the camera icon besides the search bar. You can also select the type of image (photo, animated, drawing...) by selecting the tab `Type’ beneath the images segment.   Definitions and Differences: Google gives a lot of options to extract the information. All you need is to specify your need. - If you want to know the definition, use Define (ex: Define capitalism) - If you want to derive the differences use difference between (ex: difference between UK and England) - If you want to compare use Vs (ex: Rice vs. Wheat)   Words:  You need not worry about the sentence formation while Googling. Because, words are more important than grammar for Google! So, emphasise much importance on the key words such as richest, dangerous etc. Keep changing the combination of your words until you reach a conclusion. Simple and key words are the ones that needed for best search.   Keep experimenting: Goole offers mind blowing experiences. But most of us are not aware of the tricks and stunts provided by the Google bar. Go to ‘elgoog.im’ for such skills. Or say something in your microphone after selecting the mike icon beside the Google search bar. Keep experimenting with Google and you can always be assured of varied and valuable experiences.   - Nirjara.

The Blossoming of Life

Today morning I was so depressed that I could no longer be in my house. I came out and stood at the gate wondering how worse my life would get further.  Then I saw a creeper among the pebbles left beside the road, the creeper was an ugly looking one, it stood barely under the hot sun and got dried out of its life during the summer. I almost wished to pluck it away but didn’t risk my hands to get dirty by touching it.  But now it looked different after a few showers, it got new leaves shining greenly with life and a small pink flower as though it’s celebrating its new life, as though it’s decorating the world with its existence, the creeper moved slightly along with the breeze as though it’s rejoicing in solitude.   As I stood there looking at the creeper. I felt my heart changing from the mood of despair to tranquillity.  I felt that something blossomed in my character just like that small pink flower called – Hope.  I looked at the heavens as the drizzle tickled my face as though it’s sowing the seeds of life within me, and said “God! Thanks for everything you gave” and then continued after a moment of thought “and thanks for everything you didn’t so that I could fulfil my destiny achieving them.”   I bent down to the level of the creeper and delicately touched its tiny leaves dampened with the drizzle, reminding me the fingers of child that has just come into the world. I stroked the small pink flower which looked like a crown that nature has bestowed to honour its struggle and determination to survive. I touched the creeper with the same hands which wished to pluck it out but didn’t risk for getting dirty. I stood there till my heart felt content looking at the creeper and moved back slowly into my house trying to remember the things I should do today to pursue my goal.   Welcoming the new life along with the monsoon. ..Nirjara.

..Nirjara

The Law of the Garbage Truck

David J. Pollay is a motivational speaker and a columnist. David could have been like any other speaker if he had not encountered a strange incident, twenty years back. Let’s read it in the words of David...     “One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, ‘Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!’     This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, ‘The Law of the Garbage Truck.’   He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it, and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.   Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so…Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!”   When David narrated this incident in one of his columns, it was an instant hit. Thousands of blogs have adopted it for their readers and millions of readers felt fascinated with the anecdote. David himself was so overwhelmed by the impact of this story that he has written a huge book basing on the ‘The Law of the Garbage Truck’.  The book was an instant success. People began to pledge that they won’t become a Garbage Truck. The law of the Garbage Truck has become a metaphor that reminds of important things in life that we often ignore in the light of futile emotions.   - Nirjara.

Eyebrows say what you won’t

Men might not be much interested in re shaping their eyebrows, but women certainly do. Because, they knew the importance of Eyebrows in enhancing their beauty! Some even argue that the nature has bestowed women with more beautiful eyebrows. Eyebrows would not only complete the facial expression of a person, but they often express our mood by themselves. This is how...   Eyebrow Flash   - When you look at a person who is farther than an arm`s distance, you might flash your eyebrows to greet him. - Eyebrow Flash is nothing but a quick recognition and may not be accompanied by a verbal greeting. - Though Eyebrow Flash is common among the young, giving an eyebrow flash to those who are not closer to us might be considered impolite and challenging. So if you wish to given a friendly eyebrow flash, better accompany it with a smile.   Raised Eyebrows:   There is an idiom `raised a few eyebrows’. And the idiom tells it all! We often raise our eyebrows for a while to express our surprise or disbelief. This may sometimes also reveal our disapproval or worry. When we keep our eyebrows raised during a conversation, it might mean that we are very much excited either with the partner/ issue in the conversation.   Lowered Brows:   - Lowered Eyebrows might not bring a favourable facial expression. It might either mean that the person is confused and want to see the `things’ clearly or he is not happy with what’s going on before his eyes. - Lowering the eyebrows during a conversation means that he is not in agreement with you and is ready to defend it. - Starting a conversation with lowered eyebrows indicates either dominant attitude of such person or his disgust towards the person whom he was speaking to.   Raised into middle: Bringing the eyebrows a little bit higher would indicate a sigh of relief. He might have accomplished a task or passed an ordeal. `Look! It’s over’ would be the meaning of such expression. It might also indicate little bit of anxiety, but only to such extent that it is not shocking.   Lowered into middle: If the eyebrows are sloped down, they reveal the angry mood of the person. He might probably in a frustrated sense and better be careful in approaching him. This expression might also implicate that such person is concentrating on some thought or immersed in his own world.   ...Nirjara

Sound Meditation

The final ambition of meditation is to gain tranquillity and attain stable mind. There are a lot of schools in Meditation... some being old and some being modern, and some being a fusion of both. Sound Mediation is one such practice. Let’s have a look at the way to practice it...   Before starting the meditation, close your ears with ear plugs. This would allow your mind to focus on the inner sounds rather than getting disturbed by the external ones. These ear plugs could be available at any medical stores.   Sit in a comfortable posture. Whether you are sitting on a floor or on a chair... be assured that you are comfortable. But make sure that you are not leaning back on anything. Let your spine be straight.   Let your chin be tucked down by a fraction. Close your eyes, but don’t force your eyelids either to look upwards or downwards. Let them stay in between. Don’t excrete any pressure on your eyelids. Leave them freely. Take a deep breath and take it slowly. Count number 10 while you are taking your first breath. Let your count be in the descending order with every breath you take until you reach 0. With every such breath, feel that your body and mind are getting much relaxed.   As your mind and body get relaxed, you might be hearing some feeble sounds from inwards. Different people might hear different sounds. Some might hear the sound of a buzz and some hear a sound similar to that of a Counchshell. Your mind would automatically concentrate on the new sound and you need not force it to meditate on the sound.   Don’t panic if your mind is overwhelmed by thoughts. Don’t try to suppress your thoughts and you would see that the mind would shift its focus automatically towards the inner sound.   After a few days or few weeks... the inner sounds might be changing or getting feeble. You would realise that your mind is getting calm and stable. Some might even feel an emotion of tranquillity emerging from their heart. And that is a hint that you have reached the level of perfection in Sound Meditation.   ...Nirjara
