  • African community protests; Sushma responds

    The African diplomatic community in India decided to boycott this year's Africa Day celebrations over safety of its nationals, and is seeking strong action against the killing of a Congolese student in New Delhi last week. In response of this stir External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today said she has asked her colleague and Minister of State for External Affairs General (Retd.) VK Singh to meet the heads of missions of African countries in the national capital and assure them of the government's commitment to safety and security of African nationals in India.

    Rs 11 to get 'certified' free of sins in temple!

    A Shiva temple in Pratapgarh district is in news for quite an interesting reason. This temple offers a `paapmukti' or cleansing of sins certificate to anyone who takes a dip in its water and pays Rs 11. The temple claims to have maintained a record since Independence of all those who bathed in its holy waters and got certified. A body of priests charges Re 1 for each certificate, while Rs 10 is for removal of obstacles of the devotees. It is quite amusing to see people believe in such things in this day and age.

    Virat spotted with Anushka in Bangalore

    Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and India’s Test skipper Virat Kohli, along with his former girlfriend and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma seem to be rekindling their relationship, as they were once again spotted together in Bangalore. This comes after photos surfaced of them having a meal at a Japanese restaurant where they clicked pictures with fans. The couple surely seems to be on a roll.

    Farmer gets Re.1 for a tonne of Onions

    In a shocking incident a farmer from Maharashtra has said that he could manage to earn just one rupee from selling over a tonne of onions at the district Agriculture Produce Market Committee. He says, "Every day, we are hearing news about farmer suicides from drought-hit regions. However, with onion prices touching new lows, farmers like me may be meeting the same fate." He said that On May 10, he sent 952 kg of onions in 18 gunny bags through a truck to the Pune-based Agriculture Produce Market Committee and received Rs 16 per 10 kg. So, that would be per one kg, it works to one rupee and sixty paise. And from all of this the middle men eat up the money and almost nothing ends up in the farmers hands.

    Tax defaulters to be named & shamed

    Income Tax department has come up with a novel idea to make sure people and especially the rich, pay all their taxes on time. It has decided to 'name and shame' all category of taxpayers who have a default of Rs 1 crore and above starting this financial year. An official said that the aim of the exercise is to inform the public at large about such tax evaders whom the taxman has not been able to penalize despite using various investigative and enforcement tools.  

    Hyd youth dies in swimming pool

    For Mohd Rizwan Khan, all of 19 years, a dip in a swimming pool with friends turned fatal. When his friends could not find him they searched for him and later found him at the bottom of the pool. Though they have taken him to the hospital, he was declared brought dead. Police said that as per preliminary investigation, the youth is suspected to have died after suffering a head injury in the six-and-a-half feet deep pool.  

    Obama eats street side food for $6

    The US president amidst his hectic Vietnam visit on Monday night took time out to sample street side dish with Anthony Bourdain, a chef and food critic who hosts a travel show about hidden culinary gems around the world. He said the dinner with the President costed just about $6 and that he has paid the bill for the dinner. Meanwhile, the hotel owner says,"His presence in our restaurant was a great surprise for my whole family, who could never have imagined it, even in our dreams."

    Superman ABD takes RCB to IPL final

    Any number of adjectives don't seem to do justice to the wonderful knock which AB de Villiers played yesterday to take his team to the IPL final. It was a thrilling four wicket win over Gujarat Lions on tuesday for the Bangaloreans. Chasing 159, RCB looked down and out at 29 for five before de Villiers smashed 79 off 47 balls to script a sensational comeback and take the team home in 18.2 overs.   

    SpiceJet adopts 11 drought hit villages

    In a unique way of celebrating its 11th anniversary, SpiceJet has pledged support, help and relief to 11 villages in the drought-hit Latur district of Maharashtra. Latur is one of the worst drought hit areas in the state. The airline would be co-partnering the voluntary organization "AnybodyCanHelp", and will organise, coordinate and execute the supply of approximately 71,500 liters of water to 11 villages per day across Ausa Taluka in Latur district. Water tankers with SpiceJet logo will undertake the exercise for the whole of the month starting from May 23 to June 23.

    Twitter to allow more than 140 words

    In a big announcement for the social media fans, Twitter has said on Tuesday that in coming months, photos, videos and other media won't count toward Twitter 's 140-character limit. The change is yet another step by the company to make its messaging service easier to use, and to attract new users as well.

    Kohli shows his painting skills

    It seems like Virat Kohli, who is in the form of his life has more to him than just cricket! In a painting competition with a fan at Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli painted a mountain range and also a house. While his fan made this beautiful portrait of the explosive Batsman. We have already seen the Indian Test skipper showcasing his dancing and singing skills in the past, but this will be the first time he was seen painting. 

    Amitabh to host Modi Govt Anniversary

    An event will be held at India Gate in Delhi on May 28th to mark the completion of two successful years of the Modi government. This function will be hosted by none other than Big B Amitabh Bachchan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and most of his ministerial colleague are expected to attend the event. The event called 'Zara Muskura Do' (Smile Please) will have several performances and programmes highlighting the government's "achievements". The show will be aired across the country on Doordarshan.

    US blocks $300 million aid to Pakistan

    Pakistan's link with terror is proving to be costly for them. The US government has signed a bill blocking $300 million aid to Pakistan, unless it is proved that they are acting against the terror groups in their land. However, for release of this fund, both seek certification from the defence secretary that Pakistan is taking demonstrable action against the Haqqani terror network.

    1st BJP CM of Assam sworn in

    Sarbananda Sonowal, who resigned as Union Minister of State for Sports after his party's win in the recent Assembly elections in Assam, took oath on Tuesday evening as the Chief Minister of Assam. He has become the first BJP leader to hold the post. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Ministers of five other states, Union ministers and senior BJP leaders were present at the ceremony. Addressing the gathering at the ceremony PM Modi said, "I want to thank the people of Assam who wanted development and gave a chance to Sonowal ji to serve them. Born in a tribal family, a fighter is now going to lead the people of Assam."  

    Did not insult Stalin: Jaya

    Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa today said that there was no intention to insult DMK treasurer M K Stalin by making him sit in the 10th row, which is meant for MLAs. She also thanked him for attending the swearing-in ceremony of her council of ministers on Monday. Stalin was made to sit in the middle row along with other MLAs for which DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Monday issued a statement accusing the government of ill-treating Stalin.

    Warner backs Kohli to make 1000 IPL runs

    Sunrisers skipper David Warner is backing Virat Kohli to breach the 1000 run mark in one single IPL season, which has not been achieved by anyone till now. With 919 runs so far in the tournament, Kohli, who has amassed four tons and five fifties, is just a step away to score 1,000 runs in an IPL edition. David was quoted as saying: "For his sake I hope he gets past the 1000-run barrier. It will be a massive achievement for Kohli and it would be great to witness someone of his class going past a 1000 runs in a single IPL season,"

    Egypt Air plane exploded mid air:Experts

    According to experts the EgyptAir flight which has gone missing has exploded mid air. Human remains retrieved from the crash site of the flight 804 suggest there was an explosion on board that may have brought down the aircraft in the east Mediterranean. "The logical explanation is that an explosion brought it down," the official said.

    Gujarat No.1 in toilets construction

    PM Narendra Modi's home state, Gujarat, excels in his pet Swatch Bharat project. Two years on, the change is evident on the ground. The state ranks first in construction of new toilets. People were able to get a subsidy of Rs.12000 for building of toilets. 5800 villages now are open defecation free in Gujarat.
