  • Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to pay 5 Cr fine

    The Art of Living, led by spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, must pay nearly five crores as a fine, the country's top environment courtsaid today, offering strong criticism of the organization, for its massive festival held on the banks of the River Yamuna in New Delhi earlier this year. The organizers paid 25 lakhs at the time, and said the rest would be given later. The Art of Living had been allowed to go ahead with the three-day "World Culture Festival" on the banks of the River Yamuna on the condition that it would pay a five-crore penalty for damage to the area's delicate ecosystem

    Modi is not Shahenshah: Sonia Gandhi

    When asked about Modi government's second anniversary celebrations Sonia Gandhi said, "He is the Prime Minister of India and not a 'shahenshah' (emperor)." She accused the BJP-led NDA government of indulging in lavish celebrations even as several regions of the country are battling drought and farmers were suffering due to poor agricultural output. 

    India still the fastest growing economy

    According to a survey of economists on Tuesday shows India's gross domestic product grew 7.5 per cent year-on-year between January and March, faster than the previous quarter's 7.3 per cent. India probably gathered momentum to hold its ranking as the world's fastest growing large economy in the quarter through March, giving Prime Minister Narendra Modi more to celebrate after completing two years in office last week.  

    Sister poisoned for Umpire's no ball decision

      A small town of Jarara, 20 km from Aligarh, announced that its JPL - the Jarara Premier League - would begin from May 14 and end on May 30. It was declared that the winning team would take home Rs 5,100. Umpire, Raj Kumar, in a match on May 28 called a "no ball" at a crucial moment in the game between Jarara and Bariki. Angry at the "unfair decision", one of the players, went up to the umpire and asked him to reverse the verdict.When he didn't, he was threatened of dire consequences and his sister was poisoned due to his decision.

    Major fire at Arm's Depot in Maha, 17 killed

    Major fire broke out at an ammunition depot in Maharashtra's Pulgaon killing 17 and injuring 19. An investigation has been ordered into the incident. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who was in Pune, is reported to be going to Pulgaon to see the situation. The fire broke out between 1:30 and 2 am on Tuesday at the Central Ammunition Depot at Pulgaon, which is about 110 km from Nagpur.

    500 Indians stranded in Mansarovar

      Officials today said that around 500 Indian pilgrims enroute to Kailash Mansarovar were stranded in Nepal's mountainous region of Hilsa and Simikot due to inclement weather which has also hampered the operation to evacuate them. The stranded pilgrims are part of tour organised by private travel operators.

    Yuvraj and girlfriend with IPL trophy

      Sunrisers Hyderabad star player Yuvraj Singh‘s was part of the winning team of the 9th edition of the Indian Premiere League in a nail-biting final against Virat Kohli‘s Royal Challengers Bangalore last night. While RCB were the clear favourite, it was a refreshing surprise to see the team which was considered the underdog win this one. Yuvraj’s fiance Hazel Keech was present to support him as well and the couple posed for the sweetest post-match picture.

    India's tallest Flag in Telangana

    Telangana state's second birthday is going to be special this time. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao wants the country's biggest and highest Tricolour installed in capital Hyderabad on June 2 on the occasion of the state turning 2. The government is waiting for clearance from the Airports Authority of India or AAI, the national flag will be hoisted on Thursday and then permanently flown at 303 feet (92.35 metres) at Hyderabad's Sanjeevaiah Park by the Hussainsagar Lake. The 72-feet by 108-feet flag, made of polyester, will weigh about 92 kg and is being procured from Mumbai. It would cost Rs. 1.8 crore.  

    Nirbhaya protests inspire Brazil women

    A Facebook page was created on last Thursday by a group of women to oragnise a protest against the gang-rape of a 16-year-old by more than 30 men in a Rio de Janeiro. The main message on the page asked the Rio residents to protest as it was not "acceptable that we do not make noise". With anger rising against the crime and slow police action against 33 men involved in the attack, the page urged people to take inspiration from India's Nirbhaya case. 

    England captain breaks Tendulkar's record

    The England skipper Alastair Cook achieved a fabulous milestone as he broke Sachin Tendulkar's record and became the youngest to reach 10,000 runs in Tests on the fourth day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Durham. He achieved the land-mark in the second over of England's chase. Cook became the first England player to reach the landmark of 10,000 runs and he also became the youngest at 31 years and 158 days to achieve the landmark. Tendulkar was 31 years and 326 days old when he reached the landmark against Pakistan at Eden Gardens in 2005.

    Modi does what Manmohan could'nt do

    Work suffered on the 215 km-long Lumding - Silchar section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) because of the militancy in the area and the project crawled along. Dr Manmohan Singh, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, upgraded it to a national project and increased its funding. But the Railways say bulk of the work was completed only in the last two years: perhaps the reason why Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted rail connectivity in the North East as one of the achievements of his government.

    Lalu's daughter on her way to RS

    Misa Bharti, 40, was reportedly picked by Lalu Yadav over wife Rabri Devi to be one of the two lawmakers that the Rashtriya Janata Dal will send to the Upper House of Parliament; the other is famous lawyer and BJP baiter Ram Jethmalani, who handles Mr Yadav's legal cases. Sons Tejaswi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav are ministers in the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar. Misa Bharti will serve as the face of the party in Delhi.

    Virat blames himself and AB for loss

    Virat Kohli admitted at the post match ceremony that he did not feel good finishing second best as he termed his and AB de Villiers' dismissal as the big blow in Royal Challengers Bangalore's loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League final on Sunday. He also added, "Definitely proud of the way we played this season. This was for people of Bengaluru. They have supported us in worst of seasons. We would have loved to be on other side of result. We went for a few but wicket was nice. Me and AB getting out close to each other was a big blow. Had I stayed with AB a little longer, it would have been different."

    No Tiger Safari In "Mowgli's" Land

    Madhya Pradesh forest department has been asked by the Central Zoo Authority to stop tiger safari in the state's Pench National Park citing violation of wildlife norms. Pench national Park is famous as home to 'Mowgli' the protagonist of Rudyard Kipling's famous book 'The Jungle Book'. According to records no approval has been granted for creation of safari at Pench tiger reserve or Bandhavgarh tiger reserve. Therefore, no construction work should be carried out.

    Defense Minister an 'outsider'?

    Manohar Parrikar, who assumed charge in November 2014 from Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who till then also held the defence portfolio, said he was "well settled" in the Defence Ministry. He said though he is an "outsider" in Delhi's political circles, his comments about not being settled in Delhi should not be mixed with constant rumours of his going back to Goa, his home state. Parrikar said one cannot pull out a 50 year-old tree and replant it somewhere else.

    Amul MD get underworld threat calls

    Dairy major Amul's Managing Director, RS Sodhi, allegedly received an extortion call from a person claiming to be a member of fugitive Ravi Pujari's gang, following which a probe was initiated by the Ahmedabad crime branch, police said on Monday. Crime branch officials said, "The extortion call was made from an international number. Sodhi was asked to pay Rs 25 crore or else face consequences."

    Satya Nadella meets Modi

    Satya Nadella who is on his third visit to India since he took over as Microsoft head has today met Prime Minister Modi and other ministers to discuss issues pertaining to the IT sector and enhancing partnership for initiatives like Digital India. He also met Minister of Communications and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha as well as many industry leaders and developers.

    Wipro employees to get 9.5% hike

    Following in the footsteps of its competitors like TCS and Infosys, country's third largest software services firm Wipro on Monday said it will hike salaries of its employees in the country by an average 9.5% this fiscal year. Effective June 1, onsite employees will get wage hikes of an average 2%. The company has 1,72,912 employees on its payrolls.

    Anil Ambani to venture into Defence

    Indian tycoon Anil Ambani is seeking to win contracts to manufacture all of the military hardware and more. Ambani's Reliance Group has never made a military helicopter, missile system or submarine in its history but that isn't stopping them. Ambani's plans to turn Reliance into a major defence company may be one of his boldest moves till date. It has already bid for 840 billion Indian rupees in government contracts, senior executives revealed.
