Happiness Ministry soon in this State
In a first of its kind announcement, the Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan plans to announce the creation of a "happiness ministry" when he expands his cabinet shortly. On 17 June, the chief minister had said at the state BJP executive meeting that there would be a cabinet expansion and he also announced proposal to form 'Happiness Ministry', inspired by Bhutan which has the concept of 'gross national happiness index'.
Chouhan, keen to become the country's first minister for happiness, will supervise 70 social programmes that include the Lok Sewa Guarantee (for hassle-free services), Ladli Laxmi (for girl child), Kanyadan Yojana (for weddings) and Teerth Darshan (free pilgrimages for senior citizens). The Madhya Pradesh government, which is lead by Chouhan for the past three years, has 18 cabinet ministers and four ministers of state since 2013. Expansion was expected in 2014 and 2015, but it did not happen. As per the Constitutional provision, 11 more ministers can be appointed. An official statement no the same is awaited.
