India along with 25 member countries of UN HRC have voted against Sri Lanka on human rights violation during its 22nd session held at Geneva on Thursday. India’s efforts to make any amendment to the US proposed draft failed. Out of 46 member countries, 25 supported the resolution, 13 countries opposed and 8 abstained from voting. Indian envoy to UN has said that India will encourage Sri Lanka to speed up the peace process on a broad based manner and for meaningful settlement with Lankan Tamilians.
Austria, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway and Britain are the co-sponsors of the resolution tabled by US ambassador Eileen Chamberlain Donahue. Hence, UPA government can expect DMK revise its decision of withdrawing its support to it. However, the CBI’s over enthusiasm in searching DMK Chief Karunanidhi’s son Stalin’s house today may play spoilsport in their co-operation.
