Cosmetics To Be Classified As Veg and Non Veg

Too many things were said and read about the usage of animal products in cosmetics. From fish scales to Shark liver oil, various animal ingredients were being used in the cosmetics. Animal welfare activists were continuously fighting against the slaughter of animals for the sake of beauty. The choice of using a cosmetic with the animal product might lie with the consumers. But it’s their right to know the ingredients of the products they purchase.
In 2014 the department of Consumer affairs has issued a notification that “Every package containing soap, shampoos, tooth pastes and other cosmetics and toiletries shall bear at the top of its principal display panel, a red or as the case may be, brown dot for products of non-vegetarian origin and a green dot products of vegetarian origin”. But such a display would certainly affect the sales of the cosmetics. In the country like India which is filled with vegetarians, people might certainly step back to purchase the non-vegetarian products. So the Indian Beauty and Hygiene Association (IBHA) has challenged the order in the Bombay High Court. Though the decision of the High court is pending, the government is trying to work out a practice that is favorable for all. The consumer affairs department has called for a meeting of all interested parties relating to cosmetics and toiletries to know their opinion. The meeting to be held next week might fasten the process of implementing the RED DOTS!
