When it comes to protecting their interests, the Tamil politicians would always be victorious. This was proved once again in the case of Jallikattu. Jallikattu is a controversial tradition that’s followed in Tamil Nadu. It’s a bull game that often ends in disaster. From fractures to fatalities, Jallikattu has always proven to be deadly. In 2004 at least 5 people were reported to be killed as they took up the bulls. Since then, the animal rights activists along with the human rights associations has raised their voice for banning Jallikattu. The centre too had issued a notification in 2011 stating that bulls shall not be exhibited or trained to perform. This notification was upheld in 2014 even by the Supreme Court.
Now with the growing pressure from the politicians and people of Tamil Nadu, the centre has made amendments to the notification. It states that if exhibiting bulls is part of a local custom, it can certainly be carried out! According to the present notification- with the prior approval of the district collector and with a radial distance of 15 meters, the bulls can be forced to perform. The Animal Welfare Board of India has decided to challenge the order with the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the people in Tamil Nadu were getting ready to perform Jallikattu this pongal!
