At last the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India made its decision in favor of net neutrality. In a press meet today, TRAI Chairman Ram Sewak Sharma has announced the decision regarding net neutrality. According to net neutrality, no service provider can charge different rates for different websites. The service provider might take some liberty only in case of an emergency. Earlier there was a big war between Facebook and TRAI regarding the provision of Internet. Facebook was of the opinion that people could be provided with some websites with less or nill charge. It has even devised a program called `Free basics’ according to which, Facebook along with its ally Reliance would deliver some websites at free of cost. The `Free basics’ has received the wrath of many thoughtful consumers.
They have seen it as a plan by the Facebook to conquer the internet world. Because under the `Free basics’, consumers could access only those websites that are suggested by either Facebook or Reliance. It means that you have to pay huge amount to surf popular websites like google or YouTube but you can access their Facebook alternatives at free of cost. But now, TRAI has declared that it won’t allow such tactics and would even penalize the service providers if they charge different rates for different websites!
