A soldier was found alive in Siachin after being buried under the snow for 6 days. He was one of the 10 soldiers who were swept away by the avalanche at the Indian border of Siachin. The survivor was identified as Hanamanthappa of Karnataka. Hanamanthappa has not just survived the fall, but was able to retain his breath for 6 days at a freezing temperature of -45 degrees. The rest of the soldiers were feared to be dead. Siachin is the highest war zone in the world at an altitude of 19,500 feet. The temperatures here drop down to -50 degrees during the winter. Many of the soldiers die due to the cold rather than due to the attack from the enemies. Soldiers getting deployed in Siachin would often fall prey to avalanches, snow blizzards, frost bites, altitude sickness, heart attacks… and every other fatality that’s associated with cold. Despite such frequent deaths Indian defence minister Manohar Parrikar has said that `though its painful to hear such deaths in Siachin, the army still has to be deployed there due to the security reasons’.
