Supreme Court’s ruling on the 214 coal blocks illegal allocations comes as a blow to those companies that have been robbing the nation’s natural reserve sources for decades. Many small and big plants based on these illegal coal supplies may find it hard to run the business as usually as apex court orders for immediate termination of coal mining and order the government of India to go for immediate auction of 172 coal blocks. However, the apex court considering government’s appeal has allowed coal mining in 42 blocks for the next six months, till March 31 next year.
The bench headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha said that the judgment was intended to correct the wrong done by the Centre over the years and to send a message to the government not to deal with the natural resources as if they belong to a few individuals who can fritter them away at will. So, government should aware that Supreme Court keep monitoring it coal block auctions also. So, it should be very cautious with its further allocations.
