China and US sign the Paris agreement

China and United states are the biggest GHG emitters. They together emit 38% and china alone emits 20% of global greenhouse gases. On Saturday, ahead of the G20 summit which is going to begin on Sunday in Hangzhou, the two countries signed an officially valid Paris agreement to cut down the emissions.

The executive director of Greenpeace International, Jennifer Morgan said, “The world is finally having a global climate agreement with both US and china. It signals a new era in global efforts to address the climate changes. Both the countries now need to scale and speed up their efforts in charting a future that avoids the worst impacts of climate change”.

The agreement is a major step towards the process of passing legislation and it is going to make way for other countries to follow the suit. United States and China from 2016-2100 together would avoid 51% of cumulative global greenhouse gas emissions from the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions in the Paris climate agreement.
