The High court of Mumbai has today slammed BCCI for wastage of water over cricket pitches. As the state of Maharashtra is reeling under sever drought, hundreds of farmers are choosing suicide as the only way to be relieved from drought. It’s been assessed as worse drought in recent history of Maharashtra. The ground water level has gone down and the water resources have become precious. In some villages even 144 section was being imposed to save water resources. Amid such situation, the state government has decided to host 7 IPL matches in the coming season.
It was being estimated that 40-60 lakh litres of water is needed to maintain the pitches for the schedule. As this issue of water usage was raised before the Mumbai high court through a PIL, the high court has come down strongly. “How can you waste water like this? People are more important or your IPL matches? How can you be so careless? Who wastes water like this? This is criminal wastage. You know what the condition is in Maharashtra,” said the division bench to BCCI while hearing the case today. The court has even felt that BCCI would know the value of water only if the water supply gets cut off to BCCI. The court is of the view that the matches should be played in a state where, water is abundant. However, the bench is expected to deliver its final judgement tomorrow.
