Six women drowned in Mendhar River

NAGPUR: On Sunday, six women, who were engaged in Gauri Pujan, walked into a wier on Mendhar River without knowing that it had been deepened by the civil contractor some time ago. The victims include five teenagers Janu, Poonam, Pooja, Pranita, Priya and a 50 year old woman Manda Nagose. All the victims are the residents from Indira Nagar, Sawangi.


A villager said that, the contractor abandoned the work and left the weir deep which resulted in that day’s tragedy. Also Priya’s elder brother said that, the victims were not aware that the weir had been deepened and walked into it liked they used to earlier.


Chandrasgekar Bawankule, the Gaurdian Minister visited the place and announced compensation of Rs. 25000 to all the victim’s families as preliminary assistance.
