Ayyappa - The Divine Child of Shiva and Vishnu!

Ayyappa Jayanthi falls on Pournami [Full Moon day] in Meena month of the Malayali calendar. The birth of Lord Ayyappa has a unique story associated with it. Lord Ayyappa came into this world as a result of the union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The legend narrates the story of Mahishi who wished to take revenge for her brother Mahishasura’s death.  She did penance and god a boon from Lord Brahma that none can kill her, except the child resulting from the union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. She believed that by asking for such a boon she earned immortality for herself. However, to save the world, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Mohini and from the union of Lord Shiva and Mohini came Lord Ayyappa who killed the demoness Mahishi.

This is the reason why Lord Ayyappa is known by various names like Hariharasutha, Hariharasuda, Hariharaputhiran, Manikandan and Manikanta. Ayyappa Jayanthi is known by different names which include Painkuni Uthram and Panguni Uthiram. This day is auspicious for weddings and other ceremonies as it marks the wedding day of divine couples like Parvati and Parameswara (Lord Shiva), Murugan and Deivanai, and Aandaal (also known as Kothai) and Rangamannar and Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. This day attracts millions of people to Sabarimala, the abode of Lord Ayyappa. You have to visit the place if you want to enjoy the festivities of the day. So are you ready?
