Congress Core Committee Discussion on Telangana

The Congress core committee, which met at the residence of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on 17 June, also discussed demand from Congress leaders in Telangana for a separate state. Earlier Union Finanace Minister Pranab Mukherjee had assured a delegation of Telangana leaders including ministers, MPs and legislators that he would put their views to Sonia Gandhi after she returns from her visit abroad.
The meeting was attended by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress president. With all its leaders in Telangana putting sustained pressure for a separate state, the core committee also discussed the demand for a separate Telangana. Party sources informed that no conensus has been arrived on the Telangana issue except that to hold discussions with leaders of all parties in the region.
