Often people watch reports about thieves breaking the temple locks and stealing the gold and silver ornaments and small money from the hundis. But, no one may heard about 266 kgs of gold theft until now.
It happens in the Sri Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Trivandrum in Kerala. But, here in this case no outsiders have barged into the temple and looted the gold but it was insiders only. Some officials of the temple have shown their handwork and robbed gold ornaments weighing 266 kgs during the course of last one decade or even before from that period.
A huge treasure worth Rs. 1 lakh crore consisting mainly gold ornaments studded with diamonds and other precious stones was found in the six vaults located in the basement area of the temple one and half decades ago. Supreme Court orders the CAG to audit the treasure in the vaults after several stories unleashed in the media about gold ornaments missing from the vaults.
The audit report submitted to the court reveals that 266 kgs of gold was missing from the vault during the process of gold plating of certain parts of the temple. It was submitted in the report that the temple officials have opened the vaults 82 times and taken out 893 kgs of gold for this purpose during last one decade. The officials also have taken out 82 gold vessels studded with precious stones during 2002 but returned 78 vessels only.
However, no one was blamed or no was made accountable for the missing gold. The matter was surfaced only after conducting an audit by the CAG. So, it was a great robbery of the huge treasure, yet no one was caught or found guilty. Indeed, this case and robbery deserves an entry into gunnies world records as no robber in the world can rob so much gold without being caught by the police.
