Dipa Karmakar, the 22 year old gymnast from Tripura has created history. She became the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Rio Olympics to be held in Brazil this year. She qualified for the event after excelling at the test rounds conducted in Rio last August. Dipa is not just the first female gymnast to qualify for the competition.
She happens to be the first gymnast after 52 long years to reach the achievement. No Indian gymnast could qualify for the Olympics since 1962! But making and changing history is not new for Dipa. In 2014 she became the first women gymnast from India to win a medal (bronze) in the Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow. She then became the first Indian women gymnast to enter the world championship. Now she seems to be all set to make another record in this year Olympics.
