Reports of heavy downpour all through the country is being reported. But the worst hit of all seems to be Assam and Bihar. The union home minister Rajnath Singh was in Assam to take stock of the damage caused by the ongoing floods, which have so far killed 27 people. "Declaring floods as a national calamity is not a solution to the problem. There is a need for a action plan to deal with such serious flood situation," he said. Floods are ravaging Bihar too, where 26 people have died and 25 lakh people have been displaced. Nearly 19 lakh people in 22 districts are reeling under floods in the state. Five lakh displaced people have taken shelter at relief camps. Floods have also caused massive damageto infrastructure, including roads and bridges.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has said that the railways will provide free wagons for transportation of essential commodities to the flood-affected districts of Assam. The army tweeted, saying, "Nine army columns deployed for floor relief in Assam & Bihar. 2000+ rescued. Brahmaputra breach being plugged." With houses submerged, boats have become homes to many. They sleep, cook and eat on the boats.
