Minister Shankar Rao Attacked by pro-Telangana Activists

Andhra Pradesh Handlooms and Textiles Minister Shankar Rao was attacked by students and activists of various pro-Telangana groups when he arrived to pay his last respects to TRS policy maker Prof K Jayashankar, who died on Tuesday. Raising slogans of "Jai Telangana", students and activists hurled stones and footwear at the minister's convoy. Police officials rushed to the minister's rescue and escorted him to safety. The window panes of the minister's car were damaged in the attack.

The protestors, including students of Kakatiya University, alleged that leaders of the Congress and Telugu Desam parties are responsible for the delay in formation of a separate state as they were not ready to quit their posts. Leaders of the ruling Congress party came under attack yesterday also. Mourners and Telangana activists roughed up parliament members S. Rajaiah and G. Vivek yesterday when they came to Jayashankar's house to pay their homage. Angry mourners have vowed not to allow leaders of the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) pay their respects to the late leader or attend his funeral scheduled later in the day.
