A person wishing to be the president of a nation is expected to have some character. But what if someone doesn’t have it! Duterte, who is running for the presidential election in Philippines has said something that’s hard to digest. He has been referring to an incident of 1989 prison riot where an Australian missionary was killed and inmates lines up to rape her dead body. Duterte happens to be the mayor of the Davao city where the incident happened.
He felt that the victim was so beautiful that he should have stood first in the queue to rape her. These remarks has obviously evoked strong protests across the nation. The opinion polls have recently favoured Duterte, but a sharp slide is expected to take place after this remark. Even the ambassadors from Australia and US too have condemned the remarks saying that a rape should never be joked. But Duterte is not ready for an apology that could save him some face. He felt that such harsh language is only the result of his tough upbringing. That’s certainly not a way to upbring a kid!
