A new president for Myanmar

Htin Kyaw, a close aide of Aung San Suu Kyi, was sworn in yesterday as Myanmar’s president. Hitin Kyaw would be placed in history as the first democratic leader after decades of military dictatorship. Initially it was Aung San Suu Kyi, that was thought to be right person for the post. But a clause in the constitution has prevented her from bearing the seat. The said clause prevents a person with a foreign spouse to reach the presidency.
This clause was thought to have made keeping Aung San Suu Kyi in mind, who married a British national. It was not just the clause. The military has also made it clear that 25 percent of the parliamentary should be reserved to the military. And one of the two vice presidents should be chosen from military. So, the democracy in Myanmar might still be a name sake! But after decades of dictatorship, even a partial form of democracy can be hailed as a victory. Thanks to the fight and effort made by Aung San Suu Kyi for the cause!
