At the age of 16 years, she was raped by some 42 persons in 40 days. But, the Kerala lady is still awaiting justice even after a long time spanning over a decade. The incident is known in the state as Suryanelli rape case which was happened in 1996.
Being thrown out of the villages where they lived, the family of the lady had moved two houses since the incident took place.
‘Nobody are accepting us. They are avoiding us whenever they see us. We are not in a position to move out freely in the society’, lamented the father of the unfortunate lady.
When the lady was 16, a bus conductor had passed her to his friends after he raped her. As the list included some powerful persons in the state, the lady could not get justice till now.
The family has no other source of income otherthan the pension of her father. Even though the state government had offered a job for the lady, she was arrested later due to some financial misappropriation. Many social activists are arguing that she was arrested only due to her continuing fight against those who raped her.
Kerala High Court had released about 35 people connected with the case holding only one person responsible for the ghastly incident. The lady of the family is now awaiting justice in the Supreme Court of India.
