Eyes are the most delicate part of our body. They need to be given proper care, not just to improve eyesight, but also to preserve our vision. Your eyes almost do the same amount of work as much as walking 80 KM per day! So, while doing so much of physical work, they need proper food. Eat a lot of green vegetables, carrots, seasonal fruits, etc, these give your eyes extreme energy to cope with the enormous work they do. Smoking is a big ‘no no’ when it comes to happy eyes. Try and avoid being in a place where someone else is smoking too. Passive smoking also has an enormous effect in stressing your eyes. Protect your eyes not only from that smoke, but also from vehicular pollution and dust. Always wear eye shades (goggles) when stepping out. Never strain your eyes. Don’t try to read anything that is smaller than your reading capacity by squinting or moving too close to the material. Don’t stress your eyes by watching too much T.V. Rotate your eyes in clockwise and anti clockwise direction every night before sleep. And get enough sleep. Weekly once, keep a slice of cucmber or potato on each eye for 15 minutes before sleep. This will allow your eyes to distress. Remember, Love your eyes and they will love you back. Happy eyes are attractive eyes.   - Radha Krishnaveni

The most tested and best way to cure a headache is to prevent it. Extreme sunlight, dehydration, irregular eating habits, hunger, strong odours, blasting sounds, sleeplessness, tiresomeness, anything can cause a headache. Best is to identify and avoid these triggers. But, our lifestyles, or some helpless situations would not allow us to avoid these. Then comes the plan B, into the picture. A nice oil massage, steam, and a hot water hair wash can definitely help in washing away the headache. Try and hydrate yourself by drinking a lot of water. A glass of lime water (lemonade) with salt and sugar, will immediately supply any missing hydration, glucose, and salt to your body. Rub some crushed lemon rind on your forehead for immediate relief. It works! Switch off all lights, close your eyes and relax until the headache settles down. Well, if you have the patience, how about a steam inhalation with eucalyptus leaves? At least a massage of eucalyptus oil would help to a great extent. Green tea with lemon can also help in instant relief. Every morning on empty stomach, drink lemon water mixed with honey. This will give a long standing effect on preventing headaches in the future.   - Radha Krishnaveni

First Aid – Handling an Emergency Burns and Scalds The very thought of a burn, however small, runs shivers down the spine. Burns can be very painful and often too dangerous to be ignored. Medical attention in case of a burn becomes a priority. Of course, being a little extra careful, especially when there are children around the house, making sure the appliances and the necessary tools that are used daily in the kitchen are all well maintained and the fire sources are placed properly will certainly help preventing a few accidents. However, one can never be careful enough. Burns and scalds are commonplace in most kitchens. Minor burns however can be treated at home and in most cases heal naturally. Find out how to distinguish between a minor and a major emergency. How to seek and give help when there is a burn emergency in your home to the keep the damage to the minimum. Many burns need medical attention because there is a risk of infection and shock. A young child or the elderly should always be taken to a doctor. Minor or first degree burns. 1. If the size of burn or scald is smaller than a 50ps coin and is very painful then chances are that it is a superficial burn and will in most cases heal naturally. 2. If possible remove rings, wrist or constricting clothing from the burnt before the area begins to swell. 3. Put the area under slow running water for about 10 minutes or longer if the pain continues. If the burnt or scalded area is a limb then it is simpler to keep it immersed in a tub or bucket of tap water till the pain subsides. 4. A clean sterile cloth or soft non fluffy cloth may be used to cover the burn may help.   2nd degree burns 1. You can recognise a second degree burn. It will have the characteristics of first degree burn, like the redness, swelling. pain, in addition to those, the skin will appear blotchy and blisters may form on the skin and the pain will be much more intense. These are generally the result of a very hot liquid spilling on someone or skin coming in contact with a hot item like a pan or hot iron etc. Second degree burn is called so because the burn penetrates into the second layer of the skin. 2. Remove any clothing, jewellery etc. that is close to the skin. DO NOT peel of any clothing that is stuck to the skin, 3. If the burn area is smaller than 3 inches in size treat it the same way as you would a first degree burn. Cool the burn area and bandage it loosely. Bandaging keeps air off the burn reduces pain and protects blistered skin. 4. Take a over the counter pain reliever. 5. Give small sips of water to replenish any lost body fluids.   3rd  degree burns The most serious burns involve all layers of the skin and cause permanent tissue damage. Fat, muscle and even bone may be affected. These require immediate medical attention. These occur when extended exposure to a very hot object burns through all three layers of your skin, sometimes causing muscle, fat, and bone damage. Areas may be charred black or appear dry and white. Difficulty inhaling and exhaling, carbon monoxide poisoning, or other toxic effects may occur if smoke inhalation accompanies the burn. Seek medical immediately. 1. Don’t remove burned clothing. However, do make sure the victim is no longer in contact with smouldering materials or exposed to smoke or heat. 2. Don’t immerse large severe burns in cold water. Doing so could cause a drop in body temperature (hypothermia) and deterioration of blood pressure and circulation (shock). 3. Check for signs of circulation (breathing, coughing or movement). If there is no breathing or other sign of circulation, begin CPR. 4. Elevate the burned body part or parts. Raise above heart level, when possible. 5. Cover the area of the burn. Use a cool, moist, sterile bandage; clean, moist cloth; or moist cloth towels.   Some home remedies for first and some second degree burns:   1. Use cool water or cold compress. Remember, do not use Ice. 2. Use a salt solution. Help to heal your burn and keep it clean by rinsing it every hour with a salt solution. Mix one tablespoon of salt with an 8oz cup of warm water and allow it to cool. Then, slowly pour the solution over your burned skin. 3. Try using black tea. Black tea contains tannic acid, which helps to draw heat from the deepest part of your burn. It therefore speeds the healing process and may remove some of your pain. Soak a few tea bags in some luke- warm water. Cool and use. 4. Honey, Non-fat milk and Aloe Vera gel or Vinegar relieve pain in minor burns too 5. Do not use butter, egg whites or other ointments that might trap the heat inside the wound and slow down healing process. 6. Never, remember never prick or pop open a blister or try to peel burnt skin. This might lead to infection. 7. Seek medical help immediately for any kind of electric or chemical burns. Also if the injured person is, above 60 years old, less than 5 years old, is pregnant, shows symptoms of a shock, has difficulty breathing.   - Veena ShyamRaja

We all may not be able to consume Organic food items but try to reduce depending on non-organically grown, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). well, we dont have to learn these words, but the World is talking!! To be clear, Organic plant foods are grow naturally without the aid of pesticides, herbicides, hormones and other man-made Toxins. Most Contaminated when non-organically grown: Spinach---Palak Capsicum Green chillies Potatoes Apples Peaches Strawberries Pears Cherries Imported grapes Least contaminated when non-organically grown: Cauliflower Sweet corn Onion Sweet peas Banana Kiwi Avocado Mango Papaya Pineapple If you have keenly observed, vegetables/fruits that need the outer layer/peel to be removed for use are least contaminated than those we consume with the skin/peel. Using organic food, least contaminated food helps us reduce the toxins that piled up in our bodies...eating Brocolli, cauliflower, cabbage, eggs, garlic, onion, citrus fruits, beetroots, turmeric will optimize our Liver's ability to aid detoxifying. More fiber filled foods like Apples, grapes, oats, carrots, pumpkin-sunflower seeds will help remove those toxins!!! Think!!! First Aid Handling an Emergency   All of us, however careful we might try to be, come across some medical emergency at some point of time in our lives. Every emergency demands urgent action. Although it goes without saying that one should seek immediate medical help, however before it arrives, one should be in a position, both physically and mentally, to administer first aid. The most important point to remember is not to panic when you come across any emergency. Remember to keep the injured calm before attempting to give any kind of first –aid. Many a times, accidents occur in our own homes. Cuts, Burns, Scalds, Choking, Poisoning, fall and so on. Every house must have a basic first aid kit that is easily accessible in case of an emergency. Bleeding: Many a time even if you cannot stop the bleeding altogether, reducing the flow of bleeding may be enough to save a life. When a cut is deep enough to cause the blood to flow: 1. Use water. Running water will not only clean the wound, but help to stop the bleeding. Run cold water over the cut to constrict the blood vessels and stop the bleeding. Doing the same with hot water will cauterize the cut, allowing the blood to clot. Remember not to use both hot and cold water though; just one should work well enough. 2. Lay the victim down If the wound is a little big and bleeding heavily Remove clothing from around the wound if you can without wasting time. 3. If there is no foreign body present in the wound then press down hard upon it with a clean absorbent material or with clean bare hands. If possible raise the level of the wound above the heart level to slow down bleeding. Maintain the pressure for at least five to ten minutes or more and while doing so place absorbent padding and tie a bandage firmly in place. 4. If the first bandage becomes soaked with blood, apply a new dressing on top of the original one. Do not remove the original dressing. The less a wound is disturbed, the easier it will be to stop the bleeding. 5. For clotting the blood in a small cut, try any one of these home remedies first like, a thin film of Vaseline petroleum jelly, sprinkling corn starch, aspirin paste, some sugar or a few drops of Listerine or vinegar. Do not rub into the wound, it may cause abrasions. 6. If the wound is large when there is a foreign body present in the wound. Press the edges together around the foreign body. Do not try to remove the foreign body as it may be plugging the wound. Press firmly and use gauze to bandage diagonally without going over the foreign body. 7. Get the injured person to the hospital as early as possible if the bleeding does not stop. 8. Seek a doctor’s advice before administering any medication.   - Veena Shyam Raja
