Not Reliance but Adar Poonawalla buys stake in Dharma Productions

Karan Johar has earned global reputation as one of the most prolific Indian Cinema writer, director and producer. After his father Yash Johar's death, he guided Dharma Productions to become a studio in India on par with Yash Raj Films. But in recent years, Dharma Productions has been facing financial crisis.

Their investments in Hindi films haven't turned out to be as much as fruitful as they anticipated them to be. They are involved distribution as well and recently distributed Devara in Hindi markets. Still Brahmastra, Selfie, Kalank, Liger kind of films ended up being losses to the production house.

Hence, the filmmaker has been looking for investors and there has been news about Reliance looking to buy stakes in the company. But Adar Poonawalla led Serene Productions has decided to make the big move by investing Rs.1000 crores into Dharma - film production, distribution and digital content production wing.

Dharma has sold 50% stake to Poonawalla and 50% will be held by Karan Johar as executive Chairman. Apoorva Mehta will continue as CEO looking at the creative decisions. Karan Johar might now look at producing his long time dream project, Takht into limelight with this investment.
