Appalaraju (Sunil) is an aspiring film director who lands in Hyderabad with a heart touching heroine oriented script 'Nayaki'. A small time producer Rakhi (Raghu Babu) gets impressed by the script and agrees to make a film. Appalaraju then narrates the script to heroine Kanishka narrates the script to heroine Kanishka (Sakshi Gulati) through Rakhi's associate Purnanad (Harshavardhan). and gets her aproval. Later, Kanishka even convinces her beau and top hero Babu (Adarsh) to play the hero's role, altough very small. By the time everything gets ready for the film to get started, kanishka and Babu break up. Then Kanishka ropes in an upcoming hero K T (Ajay). This makes Babu go green with envy and he tries in every way to get Appalaraju's film shelved for ever. Appalaraju, who was dead against introducing commercial elements in to his film in the beginning, slowly gives in to the pressures and starts making it according to the whims and fancies of the hero, producer and the new found financier Srisailam Anna (Bramhanandam). Finally, Appalaraju succeeds in making a film, but not as per his choice. His so called 'tragedy' movie turns out as a 'hilarious comedy', making him successful director and also a 'Gurram Award' winner.
Analysis :
First, to begin with the technical aspects of the film, there isn't anything to praise about in the movie. Unlike RGV's previous films, its production values are very poor. Content wise script is also very weak and fails to maintain interest of the audience till the end. Like any other lengthy satire, KSD Appalaraju also gets slackened in the midway. Now coming to the purpose of this movie, a question predominantly bugs the viewer - why at all an accomplished director like Ram Gopal Varma has made this amateurish flick? On the outset, it seems as if Ram Gopal Varma made this film to show how talented film makers get diverted from their aim by the prevalent circumstances in the film industry. But as the story progresses, it is quite evident, whom Varma is targeting actually. The hero Appalaraju tries his best to make a new wave, heart touching tragedy, heroine oriented movie, but ends up making a comedy movie. He himself is not satisfied with what he has done, but people make it a grand success.
TeluguOne Perspective :
No doubt, there are many despicable things in the film industry and they are well known to the public through umpteen websites and gossip columns of the press. Varma need not make a movie to showcase them. His main intention was to remind the audience how their preferences are influencing the making of movies. Performance wise, Sunil looks energetic on screen, but seems unenthusiastic till the end as if he knows in advance what's going to happen to his 'Nayaki". Swathi is somewhat better, while Sakshi Gulati had nothing much to perform. Even Bramhanandam's comedy too failed in reviving lost interest of the viewer. He looks tired all the way and somehow gives the impression that he has no interest in playing the role. To conclude, Though the idea is good, Ram Gopal Varma has totally failed in driving the nail. He could neither convince the public about their wrong preferences nor could entirely blame the industry for churning out bad films. He just ended up making mockery of a powerful medium like cinema.
