Sudheer Babu has established himself as a good actor with variety of films. He has been able to work across different genres and now, he has come up with a family entertainer, Maa Nanna Superhero. "Loser" web-series fame Abhilash Kankara has directed the film and Sunil Balusu produced the film. The movie released on 11th October 2024 and let's discuss about the movie in detail.

Plot:

Jani(Sudheer Babu) is abused by his father Srinivas(Sayaji Shinde). Srinivas doesn't care for him but expects him to pay off his loans and points at him for all the issues in his life. He calls him "unlucky" and being a mathematical genius, he tries to predict rise and fall of stocks in Stock Markets. For investing, he keeps taking loans and Jani tries to pay them off. Even though Srinivas is his foster father, Jani loves him to the core.

On the other hand, Jani's real father Prakash(Sai Chand) gets arrested in a drug smuggling issue, 25 years ago. He leaves his months old baby in an orphanage to complete a job but unknowingly, gets caught as drug smuggler. After being released from jail, he starts searching for his son. Meanwhile, Srinivas gets arrested for taking money from a political party leader and the leader asks for Rs.1 crore from Jani to release Srinivas. Can Prakash meet Jani? Will Jani be able to arrange the money? Watch the film to know more.

Analysis:

Sudheer Babu performed well in this film and showcased maturity in handling the character. In the scenes with Sayaji Shinde, he emoted well while being playful in scenes with Sai Chand. Sayaji Shinde and Sai Chand showcased their experience in handling emotional moments. Aarna did not have much to do and Shashank, Vishnu Oi tried their best to give their characters life. Annie, Raju Sundaram are good but their roles have no prominence.

A simple story needs a fresh and novel screenplay. The characters in the film need to be designed interestingly, for audiences to be able to travel with them forming an emotional connect. Each character and their interesting straits can only be helpful in such films along with interesting situations. Maa Nanna Superhero tries hard to be an emotional joy ride but falls flat in establishing any connection. The story feels very dated and screenplay even more cliched and old.

The situations do not inspire interesting conflicts or conversations. Everything feels too generic and uneventful with predictability factor being too high. You can guess the scenes, character motives and situations from a far ahead. Even the jokes, situational comedy doesn't really land and emotional rollar coaster ride in the second half also feels jarring and too generic.

Abhilash proved his mettle as a director with Loser but this film doesn't really stand in comparison with the web-series. It feels like an elaborated TV episode rather than an engaging buddy comedy film. Cinematography and production values are good but the writing underwhelms to the core. Music by Jay Krish is good but background score could have been better at crucial places.

In Conclusion:

While the movie tries to create some genuinely heartwarming scenes it underwhelms with its age-old narrative and highly predictable screenplay. On the whole, it is an underwhelming film.

Rating: 2.25/5
