Are directors looking at Mahabharat post Kalki success?
Updated : Mar 11, 2025
Telugu Cinema always saw a tendency of directors following a successful "trend" in filmmaking. Way back in 1950's, record breaking success of Mayabazaar, inspired many to invest in big budget ensemble mythological films. By the end of the next decade, slowly the social films have taken over and mytholgical films became a rarity.
Krishna's James Bond style spy film, Gudachari 116, success propelled making of such films and Cowboy film Mosagallaku Mosagadu success also lead to many. Nagarjuna's Shiva success lead to many filmmakers adapting new techniques in filmmaking from South India and Indian Cinema, as well.
Now, Kalki and HanuMan success have inspired many filmmakers to look towards Mahabharat and Ramayana for their big Pan-India dreams. As the proven stories have great legacy, many are trying to find some unique tales from these giant literary marvels that have universal appeal.
Prashanth Varma, who made HanuMan, is said to be developing a script based on Bakasura's story. The big demon had been killed by Bheema in Mahabharata and this propelled the chain of events where Bheema could overpower Jarasandha, Keechaka and finally, Duryodhana. This could be pitched to Prabhas by the director.
On the other hand, there are reports about several directors planning to make their versions of Mahabharat in entirety. Mohanlal wanted to bring a version of Mahabharat from Bheem's point of view but due to budget, the film has been dropped.
Nitesh Tiwari, the director of Dangal, has already announced Ramayana with Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi in leading roles and that too, in two parts. Already, Prabhas made Adipurush based on Ramayana, which became a huge disaster. If Nitesh Tiwari's version becomes a success, several versions will be made for sure.
The Pan-India trend is going to encourage many more directors to look at entire connecting with mythology in some way like Kalki, HanuMan or go to full blown mythology films with huge ensemble of stars. Let's see how long this trend will continue.
