What Can Today’s Generations Learn From G.D. Naidu?

Today, we have almost everything.

We have smartphones.
We have Google.
We have YouTube.
We have AI.
We have online courses.
We have access to knowledge from almost every corner of the world.

But with all this access to technology and information…

Are we creating enough?

Recently, while watching the biopic GDN, I came across the life of G.D. Naidu—an inventor, industrialist and experimenter whose life was far ahead of the technology available during his time. The film itself presents his journey as that of an inventor overcoming enormous challenges during the colonial era. (Netflix)

And one question kept coming back to me…

How did a man who lived more than 100 years ago, with very limited formal education, develop such extraordinary curiosity about machines, technology and innovation?

How did he look at a machine and think,

“How does this work?”

And then try to understand it?

How did he look at a problem and think,

“Can I build a better solution?”

That was G.D. Naidu.

And perhaps the biggest lesson today's generations can learn from his life is not simply how to become an inventor.

It is…

How to become curious again.


Don't Just Use Technology. Understand It.

Today, we use technology every minute.

We use smartphones, but how many of us understand how they actually work?

We use AI, but how many of us are curious about what is happening behind it?

We use machines every day, but how many of us stop and ask:

“Can this be made better?”

G.D. Naidu had a different relationship with technology.

He didn't just want to use machines.

He wanted to understand them.

His curiosity eventually extended into electrical, mechanical and automotive technology, among other areas.

He experimented, manufactured and developed practical solutions rather than simply being a passive consumer of technology.

Today, technology is everywhere.

But perhaps what we need most is not more technology.

We need more people who are curious enough to understand it.


Your Degree Should Not Be the End of Your Education

G.D. Naidu's formal education was limited.

But he never allowed that to become the limit of his learning.

He learned through observation.

Through experimentation.

Through machines.

Through travel.

Through experience.

Through mistakes.

Through doing.

This doesn't mean formal education is unimportant.

It means something else:

A classroom should be the beginning of learning, not the boundary of learning.

Today, a student can learn from the world's best universities without even leaving home.

The knowledge is available.

The technology is available.

The opportunities are available.

The question is:

Are we using them?


Learn by Doing

Perhaps one of the most important ideas we can take from G.D. Naidu's approach to education is simple:

Learn by doing.

Not just reading about something.

Not just watching someone else do it.

Do it yourself.

Build something.

Break something.

Experiment.

Fail.

Understand why it failed.

Try again.

This is where real learning begins.

Imagine a child learning electricity only from a textbook.

And imagine another child being allowed to build a simple electrical circuit with their own hands.

Which child is more likely to remember the lesson?

Today, we have simulations, laboratories, robotics kits, 3D printers, coding platforms and AI.

We have more tools for hands-on learning than ever before.

So the question is not whether resources exist.

The question is whether we are using them to create, or simply using technology to consume.


Don't Wait for Perfect Resources

When we think about innovation today, we often imagine expensive laboratories, advanced equipment and large teams.

But G.D. Naidu's journey tells us that innovation can begin much earlier than that.

With a machine.

With a problem.

With a question.

And with the determination to find an answer.

His early journey itself was remarkable. He became involved in transport and engineering, and the United Motor Service eventually grew into a large bus operation. He also moved beyond transport into manufacturing and technology.

That tells us something important.

Sometimes we tell ourselves:

“I don't have the right equipment.”

“I don't have enough money.”

“I don't have a laboratory.”

“I don't have the right degree.”

“I don't have the right opportunity.”

But innovation doesn't always begin with resources.

Sometimes it begins with a question.

“Why?”

“How?”

“What if?”

“Can I make this better?”

That is where an inventor begins.


Learn From the World. Build for India.

G.D. Naidu understood the importance of learning from the world.

He travelled abroad, observed technologies and brought back machines and technological knowledge.

But the purpose wasn't simply to admire what other countries had built.

He used what he learned as inspiration for experimentation, manufacturing and technological development in India.

His museum in Coimbatore also became a way of exposing people to technology and the evolution of machines. The G.D. Naidu Industrial Museum today preserves many of these technological exhibits and inventions. (Tamil Nadu Tourism)

That is an important lesson for today's generation.

We don't have to reject what the world has created.

We should learn from it.

Understand it.

Improve it.

And ask:

“How can we use this knowledge to solve India's problems?”

Today, India has a huge opportunity.

AI.

Semiconductors.

Electric vehicles.

Space technology.

Biotechnology.

Robotics.

Clean energy.

The next generation shouldn't only ask,

“What can I get from the world?”

It should also ask,

“What can I build for the world?”


Innovation Should Solve Real Problems

Innovation is not simply about creating something complicated.

The real question is:

Who does it help?

A great invention solves a real problem.

It makes something faster.

Cheaper.

Safer.

Simpler.

More accessible.

More useful.

That mindset is especially important for India.

We have millions of real-world problems waiting for better solutions.

From agriculture to transportation.

From water management to waste management.

From healthcare to education.

From energy to rural technology.

From manufacturing to public infrastructure.

Imagine if today's young minds started looking at these problems not only as problems…

but as opportunities to innovate.

That could change India.


What Can Millennials Learn?

Millennials grew up during one of India's biggest technological transitions.

We saw the world move from landlines to smartphones.

From letters to instant messaging.

From physical maps to Google Maps.

From limited information to unlimited information.

We have already experienced enormous technological change.

But the lesson from G.D. Naidu is:

Never let experience become resistance to learning.

The technology we mastered yesterday may not be the technology that defines tomorrow.

So keep learning.

Keep adapting.

Keep experimenting.


What Can Gen Z Learn?

Gen Z has grown up with extraordinary access to information.

You can learn almost anything with a smartphone.

But information alone doesn't create innovation.

There is a difference between:

knowing something,

understanding something,

and

building something.

The next step is to convert:

Information → Knowledge → Skill → Idea → Product → Impact.

Don't just become excellent consumers of content.

Become creators of solutions.


What Can Gen Alpha Learn?

Gen Alpha is growing up in a completely different world.

AI will be everywhere.

Machines will become smarter.

Learning will become more personalized.

Technology will become increasingly powerful.

But that creates an interesting challenge.

If machines can answer more questions…

will humans continue to ask better questions?

That may become one of the most important skills of the future.

Don't compete with machines at what machines do best.

Use them.

Question them.

Work with them.

And most importantly…

imagine things that don't exist yet.


And What Would G.D. Naidu Do With Today's Technology?

This is the question that fascinates me the most.

Imagine taking the young G.D. Naidu from his time…

and bringing him into today's world.

Give him a smartphone.

Give him the internet.

Give him AI.

Give him a modern laboratory.

Give him a 3D printer.

Give him access to universities and research from around the world.

Give him today's manufacturing technology.

What would he build?

What problem would he notice first?

What machine would he take apart?

What technology would he try to improve?

What new invention would he imagine?

We don't know.

But perhaps that is exactly the point.

Because the world he lived in had limited technology…

but enormous curiosity.

We live in a world where technology is abundant.

So perhaps our biggest challenge is to make sure…

our curiosity doesn't become scarce.


The Biggest Lesson From G.D. Naidu

When we talk about G.D. Naidu, we often talk about his inventions.

But perhaps his greatest contribution was something bigger.

He showed that learning doesn't have to stop with a textbook.

That curiosity can become knowledge.

Knowledge can become skill.

Skill can become innovation.

And innovation can create opportunities for an entire society.

His legacy also reminds us that innovation is not only about inventing things.

It is about creating a culture of learning, experimentation and problem-solving.

That is why his story is still relevant.

Not only for engineers.

Not only for inventors.

Not only for students.

For every generation.

Because every generation gets better technology than the previous one.

But technology alone doesn't guarantee progress.

People do.

People who question.

People who learn.

People who experiment.

People who build.

People who solve problems.

People who look at the world and say:

“This can be better.”

That is perhaps the real lesson G.D. Naidu leaves for Millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha.

We don't need everyone to become an inventor.

But we need every generation to develop the mindset of an inventor.

To observe.

To question.

To learn.

To experiment.

To create.

And finally…

to leave the world a little better than we found it.


G.D. Naidu lived in a time when technology was scarce, but curiosity was abundant.

We live in a time when technology is abundant.

So the real question is…

Can we make sure our curiosity remains abundant too?
