Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has announced a major relaxation in cinema screening regulations, allowing theatres across the state to screen up to six shows daily for newly released Tamil films. The new permission allows screenings between 6 AM and 2:30 AM the following day for the first seven days of a film's release. The relaxation also extends to local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays, with six shows permitted on these occasions.
The decision follows representations from the Tamil Film Active Producers Association, Tamil Film Producers Council and Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association. The industry bodies had sought extended screening hours and more shows to improve theatrical revenue and provide sufficient slots for multiple releases. The government has now agreed to increase the existing five-show limit to six shows.

Under the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres were originally restricted to four shows daily. An additional fifth show was permitted on public holidays and local festival days with approval from the concerned authorities. In May this year, the Vijay government relaxed the regulations, allowing five shows for the first seven days of new Tamil releases, as well as on weekends and holidays, without requiring separate permissions.
The latest decision takes that relaxation further and brings back early morning screenings, which were discontinued in 2023 following safety concerns during the release celebrations of Ajith's Thunivu. The move is expected to benefit big-ticket releases and theatre owners by creating additional screening opportunities during the crucial opening week.
