Ranbir Kapoor plans to direct like Raju Hirani

Nov 7, 2026 5:37PM

Ranbir Kapoor has revealed that he is preparing to step behind the camera, with plans to make his directorial debut within the next two to three years. The actor, who is currently promoting Ramayana: Part 1, opened up about his long-standing ambition to become a filmmaker in a conversation with BBC Asian Network alongside Sai Pallavi.

Ranbir revealed that he has already started writing a script a couple of months ago. Admitting that creating a story is far more challenging than he imagined, he expressed immense respect for writers and directors, describing filmmaking as an exciting opportunity to bring different creative minds together to tell a story.

Interestingly, the actor has a clear idea about the kind of cinema he wants to explore. While he hasn't settled on a specific genre, he mentioned films like Life Is Beautiful, It's a Wonderful Life and Rajkumar Hirani's movies as inspirations, indicating that his directorial debut could be a feel-good family drama.

Ranbir also spoke about gradually shifting his focus towards direction, describing the coming decade as potentially his last playing the kind of demanding lead roles he currently gets. However, he clarified that he wants to complete his existing commitments before making the transition and has no intention of directing himself.

The actor has Brahmastra 2, Animal 2 and Ramayana: Part 2 among his major commitments. He also has Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War, featuring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. Ranbir hopes to begin work on his directorial venture once he gets through these projects.

Filmmaking runs deep in Ranbir's family, with grandfather Raj Kapoor being one of Indian cinema's legendary actor-directors and father Rishi Kapoor having directed Aa Ab Laut Chalen. Ranbir himself assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Black. With his writing process already underway, his move towards direction could mark an interesting new chapter in his career.
