The Supreme Court on Monday has almost declared the prohibition of women in Sabarimala sanctum sanctorum as unconstitutional. "The temple cannot prohibit entry (of women), except on the basis of religion. Unless you have a constitutional right, you cannot prohibit entry, “said the special bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra. The court has made such comments while hearing a petition filed by the Indian Young Lawyers Association seeking to lift the prohibition. The Supreme Court has further questioned whether the Temple board can prove the practice to be implemented since the early days of the temple. The apex court if of the opinion that Sabarimala temple is a public place and can’t have restrictions unlike a private mutt.

It’s a known fact that women between the age group of 10-50 cannot enter the sanctum sanctorum of the Sabarimala temple. This was supposed to protect the purity of the deity from women undergoing menstruation. However this rule has become a topic for debate in recent decades. Adding to the controversy the head of the temple's board, Prayar Gopalakrishnan attracted much criticism by stating that women would be able to access the temple, if a body scanner is invented that would determine the purity of women! Now as the issue reaches the Supreme Court, everyone is eager to hear the final verdict. The final verdict of the Supreme court would certainly upset some sections of the society!
