Heavy Rains Continue to Lash Nellore, Chittoor

For the past couple days, heavy rain continues to lash parts of Nellore and Chittoor districts, throwing normal life out of gear in the two districts. Under the influence of north east monsoon and the cyclone brewing up in the Arabian sea, the rains are hammering the eastern mandals of Chittoor and western parts of Nellore district. Venkatagiri, Gudur, Sulurpet mandals of Nellore district saw continues drizzle. A cowherd was swept in the flood waters of Kalinigi river at Kammakandriga of Doravari Satram, on Sunday. The incident is reported to have happened, when he was trying to cross the river. Water levels in Kaivalya river and Upputeru continue to be near danger mark and several villages of Gudur and nearby mandals have been cut off from the rest of the district. Talapeta, Palmulakaluva, Gorela Kaluva and other villages were facing the burnt of the heavy rain.
Heavy rain was also reported in Kavali and with sea being rough, the district administration directed fishermen along the coast not to venture into the sea. Six fishermen hamlets in Kavali segment were also cut off. With increased inflows into Swarnamukhi project in Vakadu mandal, eight crest gates of project have been lifted and water released. Officials are evacuating people from the lowlying areas.
Situation in the neighbouring Chittoor is also similar, with heavy rain lashing eastern mandals of the district, while moderate rains reported from almost all mandals of the district. With increased inflows into Kalangi reservoir at KVB Puram, five gates of the project were lifted, which saw about a dozen villages in the mandal getting partially inundated and cut off from the rest of the district. People from low-lying areas have been shifted to safety.
