Located at a distance of 205 km (127 mi) from the city of Hyderabad the temple has many stories of origin associated with it. Let us go into the depth of each of these. The first story suggests that Vyasa Maharshi in search of a peaceful place, after the Kurukshetra war, came here with his disciple to spend some quiet time in meditation. This is the reason why the place was called Vasara, which was later modified to Basara as a result of Marathi influence in its pronunciation. The story continues to narrate how Vyasa put handfuls of sand in holy river Godavari which later turned into deities of Goddesses Saraswati, Kali and Lakshmi.

The Brahmandapuranam, narrates a totally different story of the Gnana Saraswati temple. This story suggests that Adi Kavi Valmiki had chosen Basara to write the Ramayana. The Gnana Saraswati temple is also famous for being one of the three temples built near the confluence of Manjira and Godavari rivers by Ashtrakutas. There is another story with another historical perspective of the Gnana Saraswati temple. This one claims that Bijuludu, a king from Karnataka is the one who built the temple. The presence of the three goddesses has added to the significance of Basara which is know as the abode of the divine trinity.

Presently the Gnana Saraswati temple is the destination of all parents who wish to begin the formal education of their little ones.
