Poonam Kaur questions if rape became common in India

on Jan 29, 2025

Poonam Kaur, an activist and talented actress, has come forward to release a video asking if harrasment and rape has become normal in India citing R.G. Kar Hospital case. She stated that she is startled to notice that Judges did not find the case, "rarest of the rare" to handle ultimate death penalty to perpetrator.

In the video, she stated that she is glad that 162 days of wait for justice has finally come to an end. But she expressed grave dissatisfaction that judge stated that the case cannot be seen as rarest of the rare occurence. Basing on this remark, she questioned, if Indian society is looking at rape as a normal crime.

She stated that she is appalled to know that such a thought process exists in Indian society which regards honor of women at a higher pedestal. She remarked that as a woman she is disgusted to know that a perpetrator in a brutal rape case did not get capital punishment but just imprisonment.

Well, she expressed her displeasure and stated that she would be scared to live in a society that treats rape as a "common crime" but not as "rare". We don't have any answer to her questions. Her fear seems valid to us, to you?
