Nayanthara has delivered a big hit with Mookuthi Amman, in the direction of RJ Balaji. The movie was inspired by Oh My God kind of films. Now, the sequel has been directed by Sundar C, who is known for his commerical formulaic films. Mookuthi Amman 2 released for Diwali festival and Regina Cassandra has played antagonist. Let's discuss about the movie in detail.
Plot:
Shakti (Nayanthara) is a lady cop in city, Vizag. She lives with her mother (Urvashi). At night, she keeps getting nightmares of big demons and war following her. She meets a fortune teller and she understands that she is goddess, herself. On the other hand, MLA's son (Duniya Vijay) gets arrested on purpose and he meets a tantric (Sunil). He tells him about a big astrological event, all planets aligning moment which happens once in 2000 years. He goes to village Mylanchi.
Shakti keeps getting summoned to Mylanchi and her life gets living hell with everything noting her to move to Mylanchi. She fights an entire gang of occult practioners who kidnap a girl for demonic sacrifice and saves her. She asks for official promotion to Mylanchi. There she is welcomed by Mantrika (Regina Cassandra), who has been awakened by Sunil. She is waiting for this moment from 2000 years. What is her connection with Shakti? Why did she living like a human when she is Mookuthi Amman? Watch the movie to know more.
Analysis:
Nayanthara is good and fits the Amman role, perfectly. She pulls off action sequences with ease and her screen presence is commendable. Regina Cassandra is also good and her screen presence is equally powerful. She does give her character a lot of grace in body language, while looking stunningly beautiful. But the writing undermines both of their characters.

In famous Sundar C style, the screenplay tries to be pacy and racy. But the content doesn't really excite or match the narrative. It feels like random stuff happening from start to end with no substantial stakes to talk about. We get several moments of Nayanthara being equated to Amman but none really land.
Duniya Vijay, Sunil and Ramachandra Raju are just cardboard caricatures with no real character. The progression of Shakti as the human to her divine form is not really written properly. If God wants to take human form to lead the life of the unborn that died because of her actions to mature or if it is just a convenient plot device, it is hard to pin point.
Sundar C tries to package the film with comedy, big action episodes, VFX led fights and there are loads of visual effects attempted. None of them look original as we see Mookuthi Amman wielding her trident like Thor's hammer and fights seem very routine and repetitive. The purpose for Amman accepting her mistake needed weightage for film to really standout but director doesn't make any use of it.
Khushbu Sundar and Sneha cameoes are wasted as they lack any impact. Production values are decent and the budget is visible. VFX work and cinematography are not outstanding or eyesore. Editing could have been better as several sequences appear random. Music by Hiphop Thamizha doesn't work at all. Overall, the movie tries to evoke God vs Devil fight and emotions but doesn't really deliver any sort of adrenaline rush or memorable moments.
Positives:
Nayanthara's screen presence
VFX work for the budget
Production values

Negatives:
Routine Story
Disinteresting Screenplay
Lack of solid drama moments
Feels rushed
More or less tries to stick to cliches
Bottomline: Old cliches work against this Amman film.
