Kanguva debacle: Are actors living in their own denial island?
on Nov 18, 2024
Kanguva starring Suriya and Disha Patani directed by Siva, released on 14th November to a wild and wide negative feedback. People had such defying reaction that they kept complaining that the sound design was so annoying and jarring that they couldn't forget the experience for days together.
The complains started from the FDFS - First Day First Show, all over and even Suriya die-hard fans couldn't really tolerate the film. More than the film, the pre-release promotional statements have caused this heavy blacklash from all corners. People have been very respectful of Suriya for his previous failures but this one just blasted all over with similar reactions.
Firstly, producer K.E. Gnanavelraja came out and addressed the criticism and negative feedback denying that people have been complaining about entire film. He stated that only sound is the issue and first 20 minutes did not work. He tried to handle it by saying that reducing sound in theatres would help.
Later, the team started inflating the numbers by almost Rs.20-25 crores according to various box office tracking sources. Still, the reactions against the movie became even more negative. People started trolling pre-release speeches and started counting down for Rs.2000 crores collection as the producer predicted.
Then, the producer stated that he and the entire team was happy with response and second part will happen in 2026. When nothing seemed to work, wife of Suriya, Jyothika, also an actress, released an open letter on her Instagram handle blaming critics, reviewers and alleging them off having an agenda and propagating hatred.
Over the first weekend, producer gave two to three interviews addressing negative feedback and Jyothika, directly attacked even viewers who had issues with the film. She stated that only first 20 mins did not work and rest of it all had hardwork of 2-3 years and praised it as visual spectacle.
The biggest takeaway from this debacle is that actors have very fragile ego and "Yes Men" around them have been nursing them for years together. When such an overwhelmingly negative feedback has been prevailing all over, either you can try to correct yourself or defend your work for ages to come.
Jyothika trying to defend Suriya's work and then naming herself as "true movie-lover" and not his wife while writing the letter, it looks like a pathetic attempt at blaming everyone elese but themselves for the mistakes. Yes, Suriya has worked hard for this film and technically it was brilliant in terms of cinematography.
But just visuals cannot make a compelling narrative. Even masters like Mani Ratnam faced debacles but they never seemed to blame audiences. Either they moved on making another film or maintained a dignified silence. Rather than showcasing that they live in a denial island, it would be better to stay silent and accept the mistakes.
Every actor has gone through such debacles and Suriya has been unable to find the best script for him for over a decade now. While Soorarai Pottru, Jai Bhim did break that run, they did not release theatrically. Maybe that's causing more frustration among his ranks more than the hardwork and money put into Kanguva.
Better scripts always warrant for better results at the box office, even at least in long run. And unfortunately, Kanguva just failed in really delivering to the potential that the script had.
