Court refuses to take Tamil Producers plea to ban reviews

Tamil Producers' Council has already stated that big budget films like Thalapathy Vijay's The Greatest of All Time, Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan and mainly, Suriya's Kanguva have been gravely effected by social media reviews. In accordance to take further stringent action, they moved to court and Madras High Court has refused to take their petition on banning reviews.

They have clarified that they are taking steps to ban such reviews where negativity is spread with a vengeance. After this they have moved to court and their official note read, "Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA) has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Centre as well as the State government to ban review of movies for three days, from the date of their theatrical release, on social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and X."

First the producers have requested exhibitors to not let YouTube channels to be allowed inside the compound of their theatres for at least 50 metres. Now, they have moved to court to legally ban or stop reviews for at least three days on social media.

Central Government or State Government cannot really put a ban on people from sharing their opinion. Those who watch the movie in theatres, they will share their opinion on social media for sure. But this move seems like a knee-jerk reaction from Kanguva's debacle rather than a carefully thought out move.

A movie has to be loved by audiences to make it a hit and reviews cannot really stop people from going to theatres. Producers seem to think that YouTube reviews can have an effect but paid reviews cannot save a film from being a debacle too.
