Test marks the reunion of Madhavan and Siddharth after their Yuva with director Mani Ratnam. Nayanthara and Meera Jasmine have been added to the mix. With such a huge ensemble star cast of incredible talents, Test movie has immediately grabbed attention of everyone. The movie has released directly on Netflix on 4th April and let's discuss about the film in detail.

Plot:

Arjun (Siddharth), a legendary cricketer, who is on the verge of retirement is adamant about continuing to play further. He pulls off sorts media and meeting room drama to secure his place in the Playing XI. His son, Adi wants to become a cricketer and see great love and care from his father. But he is distant and busy with his own life. On the other hand, his teacher Kumudha (Nayanthara) is overtly emotional and attached to kids in her class.

She has a great personal connect with Arjun, as her father is his first coach. But her husband Sarvanan (Madhavan) is a scientist who is fixated on his hydro fuel project, even though he is brilliant and an MIT returned professional. He doesn't find funding for his project and also any sort of governmental help to launch it. He doesn't regard cricket as a big thing but his wife loves it to the core. She wants to have babies but Sara feels it is a regular life and he is not interested in trivial things. How their lives are entangled with a Test Match? Watch the movie to know more.

Analysis:

The movie tries to be understated yet slightly exaggerates everything. To give an example, Siddharth is seen as a career-oriented person with no regard for any other emotion in life. We see him as a tough critic even of his son, who is just learning the game. But nothing builds on it to showcase how he is worthy to be so highly regarded when it comes to the game. It seems like he gets a free pass to stay with his family while a test match is going on.

And Saravanan, Madhavan, being such a brilliant scientist doesn't know about the funding sources. At least there should have been scenes about his research and mechanism that he is employing to convince anybody who wants to invest in such projects. While what should like his last resort doesn't get such treatment as it is mentioned in the passing but not shown explicitly like Arjun's manipulative nature.

While the writing and direction wants to explore the line, "When tested to the extreme, you'll know how the people will react, like a hero or a villain". This needed a lot more scenes and conviction to convince why there are flips in characters rather than just a mention. Many scenes where the softness and tough attire needs to be established properly, we get things pushed around rather than shown clearly.

Madhavan and Nayanthara are good and their scenes keep things engaging but Siddharth comes off guard and does so little. His character needed to grow on us but writing doesn't allow such a thing. Even Meera Jasmine is underutilised and Nayanthara's bond with her husband and Adi is underexplored. Overall, the movie could have easily been the best emotional drama along with being a sports film. But it ends being watchable only because of Madhavan.

In Conclusion:

Madhavan does well but story doesn't hold up to the promising premise.

Rating: 1.5/5
