Dhanush and Aanand L Rai have come together to deliver a huge blockbuster like Ranjhaanaa. After an underwhelming film like Atrangi Re, they are back with an indirect sequel to their first collaboration, Tere Ishk Mein. AR Rahman's songs for the film have created great buzz for the movie already and with a promise to deliver unparalleled cinematic experience, the movie released on 28th Novemeber, worldwide. Let's discuss about the film in detail.

Plot:

Shankar (Dhanush) has anger issues and even professors of his college fear to warn him. He doesn't mind going to jail as his Lawyer Father (Prakash Raj) is ready to bring him out. Mukti (Kriti Sanon) is a Ph.D student and she does a thesis on reforming violent people. While her professors don't accept her ideas, she tries to use Shankar as her subject. He warns her that he would fall in love with her while she is not in love. All hell breaks lose when he falls in intense love with her but she doesn't reciprocate. What happened between them? Did the love become a destructive force or positive union? Watch the movie to know more.

Analysis:

Dhanush is again good in his role and this is not something new for us to state. He has won National Awards for his performances and he is phenomenal in many portions. But in few scenes he is not really at his Ranjhaana best but he is yet again good even at times when writing underwhelms. Kriti Sanon is sensational in understanding her character and channeling her inner emotions to play her on screen with great conviction.

The movie is all about these two characters and their messy journey on the ocean of love that doesn't yield them anything but destruction. The characters are not playing Gods, humans or even good people, they are just plain confused and messy people. They both have issues from their childhood and their belief in world is contrast like Day and Night. So, writing a whacky relationship between them gets tough and needs to tread carefully on a thin sheet of ice.

Himanshu Sharma and Neeraj Yadav did a good job in writing sharp lines that convey the mess that they have created in their lives due to stubborness. The common and simple thought process isn't applied to these characters. While it is all good and slightly weird, the writing goes uneven with no character being given any sort of moral high ground. But this would appear as lack of clarity on their part at places as the lines don't really bring the same intensity as the actors' eyes do.

Aanand L Rai is great in utilising the creative resources he joined forces with in this film. Prakash Raj's scene, all actors performances and the framing devices, lighting techniques, usage of VFX, everything is done to the effect of necessary to tell this story. AR Rahman carries the weight of silences while filling up with great score when the situation demands. This is his absolute best work in recent times.

All said and done, the problem with Aanand L Rai's penchant to stick to whacky themes with similarly weird ideas come across his indulgence in telling a certain kind of story. While he is good at it, the film needed some characters to be sane and time given to them to explore their emotions, too. As a movie, Tere Ishk Mein is weirdly insane that is produced with great passion and penchant to deliver a novelistic narrative. He succeeds to an extent in making it a decent watch.

Bottomline:

Uneven yet highly emotional tale that is watchable due to performances

Rating: 3/5
