ET (Evariki Thalavanchadu) movie review: Well made serial starring Suriya

Suriya, whose last two films were released exclusively on OTT platforms, makes a powerful return to commercial cinema with Etharkkum Thunindhavan, which has been dubbed into Telugu as Evariki Thalavanchadu. It transports the actor back to his peak, when he made a big impact with films like Singam and Ayan. Pandiraj's film is a very formulaic entertainer that focuses on the infamous Pollachi sexual-assault case while also conveying a strong message. However, the film suffers from a lack of empathy.

Story:
Suriya plays Krishnakanth, a devoted son to his parents, a law-abiding citizen, a fearless lawyer, and, most importantly, a brother to many ladies in his community. Krishnakanth is the village's go-to guy for any difficulty, and no one can handle a crisis like he can. All is good in Krishnakanth's life until Inba (Vinay Rai), a corrupt businessman who preys on young women, arrives. When some women become involved in a sexual-assault racket, they seek Krishnakanth's assistance in dealing with the problem.

Analysis:
Suriya's Evadiki Thalavanchadu, based on the real-life Pollachi sexual-assault case, is a well-intentioned tale that gets a lot of things right by commercial cinema standards. However, aside from being highly emotive, it falls short of being more reasonable in dealing with the subject of sexual assault. For a film about how we treat women and their safety, it should have avoided having Vinay's character laud sexual assault as if it were some sort of achievement. At the same time, the film discusses how victims of rape should come out and speak up, which is clearly expressed in a pivotal sequence starring Priyanka Arul Mohan. Therefore, it's not that the entire film is problematic but it definitely could’ve done a better job at handling such a sensitive subject.

While ET has a fascinating premise, it fails to elicit a favourable emotional response. The narrative and inconsistencies in individual actors' performances fail to captivate the viewer and make the impression that the film intended. Despite some strong emotional scenes, there appears to be a disconnect between the characters.

The central plot of ET is how an infamous gang sexually exploits and murders women. When the film becomes serious, it draws you into its world. However, you become tired of seeing the choreographed drama that is designed to leave you in splits during the love and family feeling passages.

Performances:
Evadiki Thalavanchadu is Suriya's show all the way. He is in his prime form. From nailing emotional dialogues to bashing up the goons, he is fun to watch. Priyanka Arul Mohan and Vinay Rai's performances aren't that effective, which is a major disadvantage. Sathyaraj, Saranya Mohan, Soori and Ilavarasu play forgettable characters.

Overall:
ET has a cringy first half, a decent second hour, and then loses again with a lengthy climax. At best, the message and crime drama elements make it watchable. If you enjoy Suriya and don't mind the routine, give it a shot.
