Director Sampath Nandi is a specialist in making pure mass and commercial entertainers. He was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work with top star like Ram Charan for his very second directorial film. After Racha, Sampath made yet another mass masala film Bengal Tiger. Nonetheless, the director said to have finally changed his mind to make a meaningful film Gautam Nanda, though it will have all commercial elements to please all section of audiences:
Script And Ramana Maharshi Effect:
Sampath Nandi earlier stated to have influence of Ramana Maharshi and the legend’s ‘Who Am I’ book on him to pen Gautam Nanda script. “Besides ‘Who Am I’, a real life incident influenced me to design protagonist character. Though the film has a strong message, I incorporated all required ingredients to make it as a wholesome entertainer. My intention was to equally gratify all age groups.”
Gopichand And Gautam Nanda:
Hero Gopichand was going through tough times. What’s the reason behind Sampath Nandi picking the macho hero for his film? “I had committed to do a film for Sri Balaji Cine Media Producers long ago. Since they had Gopichand’s call sheets, I was asked to prepare a story for him. Then, I wrote Gautam Nanda’s story accordingly to suit Gopichand’s stature. Gopichand indeed is Gautam Nanda in real life, since he is very down to earth person. Actually, myself and Gopichand are of same persona. We both are very soft-spoken. In fact, this common feature made us becoming very close to each other.”
Hansika Motwani And Catherine Tresa:
Usually for commercial films, directors opt to pick heroines in demand. Nonetheless, Sampath Nandi chose Hansika Motwani who is almost disappearing from Tollywood and Catherine Tresa who is hardly getting offers here. “For slum girl role, I wanted a heroine who should look gorgeous and charming, even though she doesn’t wear make-up. Hansika was the only actress came in my mind for the role. For other role of Mugdha who enjoys life like anything, I wanted a girl who appears trendy and has rich and spoilt attitude. I thought Catherine would be best pick.”
Commercial Films To Message Oriented:
Sampath Nandi made himself a name for making only commercial films. Few even criticized him earlier for not experimenting with scripts and genres. Surprisingly, Gautam Nanda is complete contradictory to his previous movies. Though the film appears to be a regular entertainer, it has a solid message. What led Sampath to change his mind? “Earlier, I used to write scripts based on characterization of protagonists. However, few factors persuaded me to decide on making only content-based films. I can also confidently say that critics will love Gautam Nanda as well as my future ventures.”
Regular Climax Or Emotional End:
Of late, most of, especially commercial films, are having a deadly action sequence in the climax. Will Gautam Nanda also end with a fight? “No. As I said earlier, Gautam Nanda is not a regular film, although it is made as a commercial entertainer. It is journey of a rich guy Goutham becoming a complete man Gautam Nanda. As the story progresses, audiences will start connecting to protagonist character which has different shades. Towards the end, everyone will definitely turn emotional because of depth in the conclusion.”
Who Is Sampth Nandi?
The book ‘Who Am I’ is actually a set of questions and answers on self-enquiry that were put to Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi by Sri M Sivaprakasam Pillai in 1902. Did Sampath Nandi ever ask himself, ‘Who Am I?’ “Ramana Maharshi gave me and many others great knowledge through the book. We bother less about money and earning in life after reading the book. De facto, I changed myself many ways. Now, I’m giving utmost priority to my family.”
Tollywood Drugs Racket And Ravi Teja:
Telugu film industry and movie buffs were shocked when the names of several top celebrities cropped up in connection with drug racket. Interestingly, many celebrities are opposing SIT authorities for probing only film personalities. What’s Sampath’s take on this and how he felt when his ‘Bengal Tiger’ star Ravi Teja’s name was also heard in the drugs case? “I was literally shocked. Ravi Teja is a good friend of mine and even my family members were shocked when his name was surfaced in the case. I don’t think he use to take drugs. On the other hand, I request police and the governments to take severe action to eradicate drugs mafia.”
