STORY: Gunasekhar In A Tight Spot
on Jun 17, 2015
Telugu filmmakers are planning such a way that they will leave either weeks of vacuum at box office are clog the box office with their attack on same day. All those small films that have failed to find a date are now rushing to theatres on the day Gunasekhar is planning to unveil his magnum opus to the world.
Finally creative director Gunasekhar has fixed June 26th as the release date for his historical flick “Rudramadevi”, after failing it to bring to theatres in summer. Along with Guna’s movie, we will witness releases of Allari Naresh’s James Bond, Sandeep Kishan’s Tiger and Naga Shaurya’s Jadoogadu. What is this hurry for these films to get them to theatres on 26th itself. Why are they silent all these days? Why couldn’t they stay silent for few more days and release the films after Baahubali and Srimanthudu arrives?
Sensation— this is the only thing that could fetch huge openings to any flick. For big films out there, stardom of heroes and directors works big time. What about small films? Trade pundits say, ‘if a small movie is pitted straight against a big flick, then people will tend to look at his small film too. They will first think about the daringness of this film. Then they feel sad for such a small film getting shaded by a big movie. Out of that solidarity, audiences are expected to flock to theatres’. Perhaps we have to stress that these small films are sentimentally touching audiences with their acts.
On one side, Gunasekhar is quite confident that people will get charmed by his historical drama. Along with romance, action and sentiments, he stuffed comedy into the flick to give them a nice cinematic feel. And the presence of Anushka, Allu Arjun and Megastar Chiru’s voice are his prime weapons to reap profits at box office. There is a flip side, however. Even if all these perks are offered by Guna, it’s the content that should bind audiences to seats. Otherwise, there will be terrific openings, but not mind blowing collections in the long run.
If Rudramadevi is alone at box office until “Baahubali” arrives on July 10th, that would have benefitted the flick hugely. Now that others have jumped into bandwagon to eat some fruits, any slight fall-out in reception would kill the chances of flick. Seems like small films have literally pushed Gunasekhar into a tight spot now.
