TeluguOne remembers the” Andhra Shelly -Devulapalli”
It has been 34 years today since Dr Devulapalli Venkata Krishna Sastry popularly known as Devulapalli or Krishna Sastry passed away, but who can forget the legacy of rich Telugu literature and songs that he has left behind. Apart from his literary works and the translation of the Tamil Tiruppavvai, he had penned close to 160 film songs and many light music songs which are still played in the All India Radio and on stage by singers time and again with a separate genre called “Devulapalli Lalitha Geetalu”.
With his entry into Tollywood tinsel town with the movie Malleeswari he established himself as screenplay & story writer and lyricist. His songs encompassed all the fine elements of romance, subtle sensuality, devotion, passion and finesse which were loved by the Telugu Audience giving him the befitting title of the “Andhra Shelly “.
”Kusalama Neevu Kusaleme naaa” a romantic song from the movie Balipeetham ,”Prathi Raathri Vasantha Rathri” with Ghantasala and SP Balasubramanyam singing it from the movie Ekaveera and the song “Aakulo Aakunai “ from Meghasandesham are just few samples of the myriad of songs he wrote. The Govt. Of India recognized his contribution and awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 1976, but for him awards never meant anything.
There are still many unpublished volumes of his poetry and which has to be compiled and published as they will help the current and next generations of budding writers.
To be described in a song by Devulapalli was like an honour or an opportunity to be immortalized for ever. In some Telugu songs where the lyrics go like this “Krishna Sastry kavitha Krishnaveni pongula and one more from the movie Gopalarao gari Ammayi where SPB sings “Gopalaravu gari ammayi lokam theliyaani paapayi Devulaplli kavithalee..”, are a tribute to his poetic genius
