Citadel has not become a global success as anticipated but the series got a second season with a promise that it would be better. The prequel to original series about Priyanka Chopra's character Nadia's roots, Citadel: Honey Bunny starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha released on 6th November on Amazon Prime Video. The series has been helmed by Raj & DK, who already directed hit series like The Family Man and Farzi. Let's see how this action packed spy thriller fares over six episode first season.
Plot:
Honey(Samantha Ruth Prabhu) stays in Nainital with her daughter Nadia. She is always on guard but gets captured by KD(Saqib Saleem)'s men. She tries to escape. On the other hand, Bunny(Varun Dhawan) who is in a foreign country, gets to know about her existence. He has to find a way to reach her and save them. Meanwhile, we see about their past where Honey is revealed to be working for Vishwa(Kay Kay Menon) on secret missions. How did Honey and Bunny meet? What transpired between them to separate? Watch Citadel: Honey Bunny to know more.
Analysis:
The cast of Citadel Honey Bunny is an exciting match up with everything handed over to explode. Varun Dhawan is inspired, in shape and completely dedicated to the action but we don't really feel an urge to back him as the lead in this one. His attire is slick and happening yet, he feels an distinctive person rather than a lead protagonist we can connect with. The character design needed to be more grounded and believable from the word go.
Samantha Ruth Prabhu is good in action sequences and love scenes, asusual. But in emotional scenes she is found wanting in this one. She tried hard to induce life into a character that borders on being one note from start to end. The general attraction that we feel looking at her and needed for this character are missing due to her too serious persona. Makers needed to take care about the same in writing. Kay Kay Menon, Simran Bagga feel wasted in this one.
While both the actors play fun characters in the first half, they seem to be trying to be gritty and intense even in those parts that they need to loosen up. Even the dialogues don't really have the same sharpness that we normally associate with Raj & DK. Everything feels generic and assembled rather than makers finding a flow that sticks and lands perfectly.
The directors did deliver enjoyable series with The Family Man and Farzi had many moments to cherish. But when it comes to Honey Bunny they did not really push the envelope as much as they wanted to. One feels so, as they just kept things uninteresting from the moment it started and never really found the emotional connect despite some sleek action and cool visuals. While there are beats for a good thriller, they don't really land perfectly as the makers anticipated.
In Conclusion:
Tries super hard to be engaging yet fails to find an emotional connectivity. A wasted opportunity.
