Ram Pothineni has been struggling with his last three movies being huge disasters. With Andhra King Taluka, he succeeded in creating a positive vibe among audiences for the film as it represented their fan emotions and moments in the teaser and trailer. Songs have become popular creating buzz for the film. Now, the movie released in theatres and let's discusss about the biopic of the fan, in detail.
Plot:
Sagar (Ram Pothineni) hails from a Lanka village in Godavari districts and the people from his village are treated as third grade citizens without any identity. He showcases himself as Andhra King Taluka, making his love towards his favourite star, as his identity. His emotional connection with his star goes deeper than just being fascinated by his on-screen image and films. His father (Rao Ramesh) wants him to study and succeed changing his future, at least. But Sagar grows as a big fan of "Andhra King" Surya (Upendra), so much so that he is ready to go to jail as well for his idol.
Still, his father feels like Sagar has so much to offer than just being a fan. Sagar falls in love with Mahalakshmi (Bhagyashri Borse) who belongs upper caste than him and also daughter of a theatre owner (Murli Sharma). Sagar has to find an identity for himself to be able to get her hand for marriage on the other hand, he helps Surya, anonymously with Rs.3 crores for his financially struggling 100th film. How did he do that? What is his journey to reach to that point from a nobody? Watch the movie on screen.
Analysis:
Ram Pothineni is believable and charming as a fan. His eyes, body language and his diction all lend to character of Sagar, being believable on screen. He is earnest and honest in his depiction of the character. Bhagyashri Borse looked different and matured as an actor from her previous films. Upendra is undone by average writing but his performance is good. Rao Ramesh gets a meaty sequence among others and he did it pretty well.
While Ram's performance is good, his character needed to emotional connect with audiences from being a fan who gets obsessed by his devotion towards his idol. The movie needed the story to tread on the line of love and obsession very carefully. It tries to celebrate the obsession and hence, it starts to drive away from the reality. Yes, there are many instances of fans trying to go beyond their limits for their idols but set-up needed to be fresh and more imaginative.
The story is set-up in a very predictable set-up that by interval, you can predict what's going to happen in the climax. While the idea is good, director Mahesh Babu P's penchant to stick to the story is admirable, production values are apt, even the performances are believable his problem lies in trying to stick to a "done and dusted" template and hoping for magic of cliches to work big time. Yes, they do work but it needs a lot more conviction and novelty.
Idea is fresh, everyone in cast and crew believed in the film big time but the execution and writing needed even better set-up or sequences that are explored in a way that audiences are captivated to not think about resolution or hope that the known resolution be achieved. This execution lacks such depth as the struggle of the lead is written and executed in a superficial manner.
Framing wise, Mahesh Babu tried to stay honest to Sagar's fascination and obsession with cinema and big screen in a positive. He can identify his favorite just by his shadow projection on screen. He tries to find his identity always with the screen and it is handled brilliantly. His writing and set-up needed to be much better and unique for this point to shine better.
Bottomline:
Predictability and lack of strong emotional core hampers the film even though idea is good and makers showcased honesty in presenting it.
Rating: 2.5/5
