"Alphabets
of all languages are beautiful. Expressing each letter especially
"THOTA" meaning garden, was with which I began the
"Script Series". It came to life like the creeper
growing in a garden, each letter intertwining"- Tharani.
Tharani
is the only art director to have bagged the Padmashri Award
in addition to three state government awards and a Filmfare
award for the unforgettable Kolkata street set in Choodalani
Vundi. Over 35 years, he has designed for more than 100 films
in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.
Thota
Tharani's sets have always been the subject of discussion,
ever since his work came to the fore in Mani Ratnam's Nayakan.
The hallmark of Tharani's work is that his sets are close
to reality. “I see that my sets look real. What's the
point in erecting a set that looks artificial?” shrugs
Tharani.

mudras. The set that took six months to complete was the brainchild
of the acclaimed art director, Thota Tharani. Crafting it

it and you need to do something more, something extra in each
and every project,” says the man who has won the best
