Soulful Songs (Alanati Ramachandrudu)

on Nov 10, 2016

‘Alanati Ramachandrudu’ from Murari movie composed by Manisharma, written by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry, sung by Jikki, Sunitha and Sandhya. This song will remain as an evergreen marriage song in the hearts of all Telugu music lovers. In the recent times, these sort of compositions are rare and due to its classic nature, it is considered as one of the all-time top 10 songs of Telugu film marriage songs. Alanati Ramachandrudu song being played annually during the SitaRamula Kalyanam at Bhadrachalam is a testimony to its brilliance. This is one of the finest compositions of Manisharma and is potentially his all-time best in terms of traditional tunes.

As per the situation, this song starts off with a wonderful music bit followed by female chorus to bring the feel of a marriage. Then starts the song 'Alanati Ramachandrudu' sung by the melodious voice of Sunitha’s followed by the surprise factor of this song, a matured voice 'Jikki' garu. Jikki is one of the finest singers at the time of 1940s to 1960s and she has almost recorded 1,00,000 songs in all main languages over that period. She came back with super hit song Janavule composed by Ilayaraja in 1991 followed by Ninne pelladutha title song in 1996. Alanati Ramachandrudu was her last recorded song in 2001. There is one more voice in this song sung by Sandhya who is well known as P.Susheela’s daughter-in-law and who was introduced as a playback singer by A.R.Rahman in Iddaru movie. As per the marriage situation which is a get-together of many families, Manisharma tried to cover all age group singers like Jikki, Sandhya and Sunitha. This is a wonderful feast to all musical lovers!

Alanati Ramachandrudu was a trend-setting song at the time it was released. This song comes before the climax of this movie. That is the situation where people expect to listen a mass or peppy number before the climax and that is the trend followed in last three decades. But, director Krishna Vamsi chose a different approach and it takes guts to do this in a mainstream commercial movie. Krishna Vamsi also revealed the untold story of this song in one of his interviews. Even the movie unit members also proposed to have a mass number in this situation but Krishna Vamsi insisted to have a marriage song. Sometimes, we have to trust the gut feeling of the director and we have to take our hats off to Krishna Vamsi for his tremendous judgement on the placement of this song. Not only Mahesh Babu but the entire movie unit is proud of the song output till date.

This song was composed in ‘Brundavan Sarang’ Raagam. I always appreciate the kind of effort that Manisharma put into every single composition, particularly in his melodies. This song is a perfect example especially when comes to the orchestration of this song. To showcase the song importance, Manisharma used all kind of traditional instruments Strings like Veena, Sitara, Santur; for Rhythms Mrudangam, Thavil, Ghatam; Nadaswaram (Sannai melam); Electrical Key board and other instruments to create the divine mood of a traditional marriage.

This is not complete without mentioning the legendary lyricist Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry. No one would have written this song better than Seetharama Sastry. He starts off the song with introducing the bride and groom. I like the below lines

'chandamaama chandamaama kindiki choodammaa
ee nelameedi nelaraajuni choosi nivverabovammaa
vennelamma vennelamma vannelu chaalammaa
maa annula minnaku sarigaalevani velavela bovammaa'

Sirivennela covers all sorts of marital words and combinations in first stanza of this song like Pustelu, Mutyala Talambraalu, Akshithalu. And in second stanza, he beautifully compares Site-Rama, Gouri-Shankara and rest of the gods with this film bride & groom. This is so heart touching.
They say marriages are made in heaven. Similarly, I feel you need divine intervention to create soulful traditional wedding songs like this. Saraswati-putras Mani Sharma, Seetharama Sastry and all the singers created this magic.
