soulful songs (Kopama Na Paina)

on Nov 17, 2016

Kopama Na Paina’ from Varsham movie, composed by Devi Sri Prasad, written by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry, sung by Karthik and Shreya Ghoshal. Devi Sri Prasad (DSP) is regarded as one of the best music directors in South Indian film industry. By the time Varsham music album was released, DSP has done pretty good films as music director viz. Anandham, Manmadhudu and Khadgam. But, Varsham has taken Devi Sri Prasad to the elite list of telugu music directors list. He has won best music director (viz. Filmfare, Nandi and CineMaa) for Vasham.

This song starts off with a beautiful foot tapping beat followed by catchy tune/lyrics 'Kopama na paina' sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Karthik. This song is composed in Hindolam. What eloquent use of raga Hindolam by DSP! I find it difficult to describe the sharpness in transitions that makes this song such high calibre, just as a poem is best described only by the poem itself. This is Devi Sri Prasad's one of the best compositions. Seems to be easy and simple to sing but there is a lot of depth in the style that DSP has come up with the song. The perfect combo of composition, orchestration, singers and lyric writer. Ingenius!

When comes to orchestration, I feel like DSP is one of the experts to use Flute, Veena at his best in certain music bits and you can listen to these instruments in this song. Apart from Flute/Veena, he has also used the basic electric pads, drums, Keyboard and other instruments to bring the impact of the song. If I re-call the very first back ground music (BGM) after the first section & chorus portion of the song, a string instrument (I guess, it is Mandolin kind of Guitar) is followed by Veena/Flute, chorus and then the stanza. There were occasions when I listened to this song in repeat mode just for this bit.

In the new telugu filmy songs era, conversation-based songs between the hero and heroine are very rare. This is one of the songs that comes into this category. To add to this, Seetharama Sastry has exclusively enhanced the song with the lyrics. Very simple and easy going lyrics which can be hummed by every individual. I like these below lines in particular,

O kassumani khaaram ga kasirinadi chaalinka
urumu venaka chinuku tadigaa karagava kanikaaramga
kudurga kada daaka kalisi adugeyyavu gaa
kannula venake karigipoye kalavi ganukaa

And, the way Shreya Ghoshal and Karthik has given the expressions for these lines are mind blowing. This was the first time where Karthik and Shreya ghoshal paired up for a duet song and the result is an evergreen modern melody. These singers are considered as the next generation of S.P.Balasubrahmanyam and K.S.Chithra. This song turned out to be one of biggest hit numbers of 2004 and people were very excited to see what the pair had to offer next.

I am pretty sure many of you have hummed this song to your loved one already. This is the beauty of cute melodies, they stick with you for a long time and bring a smile to your face every single time you listen to them. Hats off to the all the musicians who were involved in creating this soulful song.
