Tension prevailed in Kagaznagar town on yesterday when followers of Telangana Rashtra Samiti MLA Kaveti Sammaiah of Sirpur (T) and Telangana agitators clashed over alleged cross-voting in the recent MLC elections by Mr Sammaiah. Six members from both the groups were injured in the clash.
Local police led by Kagaznagar deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Shashidhar Raju, circle-inspector Rahman and sub-inspector Ganga Reddy rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by dispersing both groups. Owners of shops and business establishments downed shutters for some time due to the tension.
The agitators obstructed a motorcycle rally taken out to Kagaznagar town from Vempalli village in the mandal on the arrival of the MLA to the constituency after a long gap. They alleged that Mr Sammaiah had no moral right to continue as MLA as he had voted for the Congress candidate in the MLC elections defying party whip. They described him as a betrayer of Telangana. Led by former municipal councilor Vishweshwar, the Telangana protagonists raised slogans against the MLA and demanded that he resign when the rally reached Rajiv Gandhi chowrasta in the town. Responding to the demand by the agitators, MLA Mr Sammaiah challenged them to prove his guilt, and hang him if he was found guilty. The two groups again clashed near Venkataramana theatre when they came face to face.
