According to latest reports, Centre is planning to set up a 6000 mw capacity nuclear power plant in the Andhra Pradesh. Actually, it plans to set up the plant in Midnapur in West Bengal state, but has to drop the idea as the fishermen, social activists and even the Chief Minister of the state Mamata Benerjee also strongly opposed it.
After careful study, the nuclear experts have suggested that the area between Prakasham and Nellore districts in Andhra Pradesh is quite suitable for setting up this nuclear power plant. Centre is quite hopeful on this proposal because its alliance partner TDP is currently ruling the state. Hence, this proposal may materialize if Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu agrees for it.
But, earlier during Congress regime the state government has planned to set up nuclear power plant at Srikakulam, but has to drop it after facing protests from the local people. So, the state and central governments have to take opinion of the people living in proposed area before going ahead with this project.
